White House THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON June 23, 1950 MEMORANDUM TO: The President FROM: Lorenzo S. Winslow The attached memorandum sent to me from Mr. Robert E. White of the Spencer, White and Prentis Company, may be of special interest to you. The Structural Engineer, Mahmood K. Taher is a young Persian engineer, formerly in the Persian Diplomatic Service but now naturalized and a resident of Washington, D. C. He was temporarily employed by Spencer, White and Prentis during the underpinning operations. The Spencer, White and Prentis Company, together with Mr. White, should be especially commended for the efficient and economical manner in which all of the underpinning work was executed. It was reported at the meeting of the Commission last Tuesday that the underpinning of the Mansion was 98% completed at 64% of the original estimated cost. The original estimated cost of the following work performed by Spencer, White and Prentis, was made April 1, 1949: Underpinning $355,000 Excavation of the Basement- 125,000 Column Footings 75,000 Shoring Floors and Walls 50,000 Temporary Truss Supports- 225,000 TRUMAN s $830,000 WECORDS ssew
