PRESIDENT: That's right. Well., it's the Mall. The White House is on the north
side of the Mall, the Jefferson Mamorial is on the south side of the Mall and
the Vlashington Monument is supposed to be in line with them. But when they
went
to build the Washington Monument there was a swamp where they wanted to put it,
caused by the old Chesapeake and Potomac Canal. So they moved the monument 160
feet east of the point where it ought to be -- the Washington Monvment is 160
feet east of where it ought to have been, but it does not injure the situation
and it's standing up which it wouldn't have done if they had put it in the swamp.
Then the Lincoln Memorial is at one end of the Mall, the west end, and the Capitol
Building is the other -- the Washington Monument is a part of that axis.
MR.
RASHI: This porch too -- you've been kmown to stand out there and watch ball.
games down on the ellipse from time to time, haven't you, Mr. President?
PRESTOENT: I tried to go. down to one of those ball games, one Sunday when I was
here by myself, and all I succeeded in doing was to break up the ball] game.
MR. RASH: Well, that was a shame, Mr. President. We're still sitting here in the
Red Room -- this smal.l informal little parlor that's toward the west side of the
building; and J should think, Mr. President, we might like to continue this tour.
PRESTDENT: All right.
MR. RASH: As we walk out, this is the famous Sargent portrait of Theodore
Roosevelt there on the wall.
PRESTDENT: Yes, that's right, at the door as you go out.
MR. RASH: We are back out in the Main Corridor and we're going to [:0 into the
Blue Room in just a moment, but let's take a look first, Mr. President, at this
new seal which we talked about. The new seal is placed right over the top of
the door here and it shows the eagle's head pointed toward the olive branch.
PRESTDENT: That's correct. It also has another thing about it that's new.
Surrounding the eagle, over whose head are 13 stars of the 13 original States,
are 48 stars, which represent the whole Union, and on the outside of the whole
thing it says, the Seal of the President of the United States. It's a beautiful
seal.
MR. RASH: It certainly is and it's more, much more appropriate there, immediately
over the Blue Room, than it is on the floor where people can't walk on the Seal.
Well, thank yon very much Mr. President. Now I'm going to turn you over to Frank
Bourgholtzer.
PRESIDENT: All right.
MR. RASH: He's overdue.
MR. Bourgholtzer: Yes sir, Mr. President, if you would walk this way. This room
is one of. the three oval rooms, isn't is, Mr. President?
PRESIDENT: Yes, the Diplomatic Reception Room on the ground floor, and the Blue
Room and my study on the second floor are all oval rooms. It's a beautiful room.
This room is, and this part right here is where Mrs. Truman and I stand when we
have State Receptions.
Mr. BOURGHOLT%ER: Mrs. Truman where I am or on your left?
PRESIDENT: Mrs. Truman stands where you are, and just the other evening we stood
here and shook hands with 1539 people by count.
