Dear Senator:
I appreciate most highly yours of the twenty-
seventh regarding the White House construction
program.
I stayed in the White House last night for the first
time since November 11, 1948. It is beautiful in-
side and out. There is only one thing I am sorry
about and that is, we did not get the Pennsylvania
Avenue front changed so it would be in proportion
with the whole building. It has been out of propor-
tion ever since Andrew Jackson added the front row
of columns to the porch but I suppose there is nothing
we could do about it.
