BRITISH EMBASSY
WASHINGTON
27th April, 1949
Dear Mr President,
You will remember that in a letter which he addressed
to you on the 15th March last Mr. Attlee informed you of the
meeting of Commonwealth Prime Ministers which it was proposed
to hold in London in order to discuss the constitutional
position of India within the British Commonwealth of Nations.
In his letter the Prime Minister promised to keep you informed
in due course of further developments.
I now enclose a message from Mr. Attlee which I
have just received from London with instructions to deliver
it to you as soon as possible. You will see that the message
describes the outcome of the meetings of the Commonwealth
Prime Ministers.
I understand that a press release on this subject
will be issued at nine p.m. Washington time tonight.
