THE SECRETARY OF STATE
the
WASHINGTON
October 3, 1952
My dear Mr. President:
I refer to my letter of September 30, 1952 in which I
enclosed a draft of instructions to be given to Ambassador
Caffery concerning the reply to General Naguib's approach.
The British Government, to which we communicated these
draft instructions, has now informed us of its complete
agreement. I believe that this reaction which was given to
us in such a short time is most encouraging. Ambassador
Caffery in Cairo and Ambassador Gifford in London are also
in agreement with the draft reply. We are therefore
authorizing Ambassador Caffery to reply to General Naguib
along the lines of paragraph 7 of his instructions.
I shall keep you fully informed of the Egyptian reaction
to our reply.
Most respectfully,
Atam
The President,
The White House.
