HARRISONVILLE, MO. Oct. 26: The Republican "old Guard" leaders have only
one purpose in the present political campaign, Judge Harry S. Truman, Democrat-
1c nominee for United States Senator, said in a speech here tonight. That is,
he declared, to leave the impression that if they were returned to national con-
trol they would let the natural flow of economic law cure the depression.
"The depression was caused by the Tory leaders now in charge of Republican
party affairs interfering with the natural economic law," Truman declared.
"There has been no natural economic law effective in the United States since
the first Republican legislation was passed granting any interest a favor to
the exclusion of other interests. It was the practice of favoritism by Repub-
lican reactionaries that brought on the Wall street crash and the resultant
panic.
11 The effort of the Democratic adm inistration has been exerted to overcome
the lopsided condition of euonomic affairs. Broadly, there are only two basic
industries, agriculture and manufacturing. Other lines of activity, finance,
transportation, etc., are mere elements and adjuncts to these two primal business-
es.
"That is astrue today as dt was in those early days when a tillerof the soil
gave a part of his products to thepotter for an earthen vessel. It was
true
when finance began as barter and the shoulder-borne freight of early day man
was our first transportation. We still trade pots for food and food for pots,
only on a larger scale.
11
The subsidies, the tariffs and other legislative favors given industry by
reactionary Republican congresses to the exclusion of agriculture created a
maladjustment in the workingof economic law. There was no equity inX trade.
Industry grew at the expense of the farm until the farm was almost destroyed.
The
inevitable happened. The Wall Street crash ensued. The farmer was pay ing
too much food for his pots. He could buy no more. 11
