FOR THE PRESIDENT AND THE SECRETARY ONLY
One. At an audience with the Holy Father this
morning the Pope again Expressed his sorrow at the
decease of President Roosevelt and enlarged upon the
importance of his leadership and the sorrow which
people of all classes have Expressed upon his demise.
HE inquired with friendly interest concerning the health
and welfare of President Truman. HE asked particularly
if President Truman would carry forward the general
ideals of President Roosevelt to which I replied that
the President had already publicly stated that was his
intention. (Speech to Congress April 16). Holiness
Expressed his Earnest hope and prayer for President
Truman and his successful administration.
Two. WE spoke briefly of the San Francisco Con-
ference concerning which I indicated that Foreign
