It is a very fine letter and I\nam grateful to you.\nI had a talk with Mr. Bohlen this afternoon\nand though I haven t heard from the Secretary\nhe brought me some messages from him. I must\nsay that talking with Mr. Bohlen did not give\nme a feeling of any great decisions on various\nquestions, though he did make me feel that\nthere was deep concern, and I understand some\nof the difficulties and intentions better than\n1 did before.\nHowever, I can not say that even now the tempor-\nary measures that we have suggested for Palestine\nreally make anything simpler or safer than it\nwas before, but perhaps it will prove to be a\nsolution and I certainly pray it will.\nAt the end of his visit Mr. Bohlen asked me\nabout a statement which Franklin, junior had\nmade and I want to tell you that while Franklin\ntolã me he intended to make this statement, he\ndid not ask me for my opinion.\nThere is without any question among the younger\nDemocrats a feeling that the party as at present\nconstituted is going down to serious defeat\nand may not be able to survive as the liberal\nparty. Whether they are right or wrong, I do\nnot know. I made up my mind long ago that work-\ning in the United Nations meant, as far as pos-\nsible, putting aside partisan political activity\nand I would not presume to dictate to my children\nor to any one else what their actions should be.\nI have not and I do not intend to have any part\nin pre-convention activities.\nVery sincerely yours,\nThana Transmelt"
