Weather: Broken to overcast at 11,000 feet. Overcast at 800 feet in west and south coastal areas improving to broken at 3,500 feet. Forecast: Low overcast in coastal areas improving to broken in late morning. Scat- tered rainshowers in late afternoon over central Korea. 2. Soviet participation: Negative. 3. Operations: ENEMY SITUATION a. Chochiwon, an important rail and road net center which had provided lateral communication with the 1st ROK Corps, fell to the enemy as elements of the 24th Division withdrew south of the Kum River. (FECOM) (SECRET) b. The 1st and 3d North Korean Divisions which had spearheaded the recent enemy advances against the 34th and 21st U.S. RCT's were re- lieved by the 6th and 4th North Korean Divisions. The bulk of the 6th Div- ision is in the vicinity of Chugwong where it can reconnoiter sites for possi- ble crossings of the Kum River on the U.S. west flank and rear. The 4th Division has taken over the front extending from about 3 miles north of Kongju eastward to Yongi. (FECOM) (SECRET) C. Elements of the 2d North Korean Division crossed the Pogang River and succeeded in penetrating the 1st ROK defenses in the area south of Toam. (FECOM) (SECRET) d. The southward advance of the 15th North Korean Division along the Chungju-Hamchang line gained sufficient momentum to permit the seizure of Yonpung and, according to one report, to advance leading elements to a road junction 3 miles southeast of Yonpung. The 6th ROK Division is conducting a delaying action along this highway which traverses a key defile in the mountain passes.
