Forecast: Clear. 2. Soviet Participation: Negative. 3. Enemy Situation a. North Korean forces in the Chinju area are in retreat and abandoning their equipment and supplies. Only light resistance was offered attacking U.S. forces. Scattered enemy elements have been left throughout the area from the front lines to Chindong. North Korean troops are withdrawing to and organizing positions on the high ground to the least of Chinju. (FECOM) (SECRET) b. Enemy forces in the vicinity of the bridgehead on the Naktong River nine miles due west of Yongsan are under attack by friendly forces. There are indications of a possible enemy withdrawal at this point. (FECOM) (SECRET) C. An estimated company sized enemy bridgehead established on the Naktong southeast of Waegwan has been placed under attack by friendly forces. The enemy bridgehead on the Naktong River five miles north of Waegwan is believed to have been wiped out. Small enemy forces to the east of the Naktong North of Waegwan have attempted to withdraw under heavy ROK fire. North Korean artillery fired on its own elements in an attempt to stop their with- drawal. Enemy forces to the east of the river reportedly were ordered to hold occupied high ground at all costs as a North Korean general attack along the river had been planned for the night of 9-10 August. The 1st Cavalry Division reports, however, only 150 enemy troops east of the river and under attack, with no indications of an attempt to reinforce their bridgehead. A pilot reports that a troop concentration and artillery pieces were observed in the area about three miles north of Songju.
