10:30am Mrs. BEHAN to Mr. RANDOLPH PAUL (Phon.) of (law firm of) LORD,
DAY and LORD for CORCORAN. The latter talked and said he wants
to see PAUL about 4 P.M. today. O.K. CORCORAN will come to
PAUL's office at that time.
10:33am
CORCORAN to GEORGE KILLIAN of the Democratic National Committee.
GEORGE asked TOM where he was at the TOM CLARK reception Saturday.
TOM said he was there but GEORGE said he did not see him. GEORGE
and TOM will see each other today but TOM will be too busy to
hear President TRUMAN.
10:45am CORCORAN to NAVY DEPARTMENT, Extension 63153? to Mr. JOHN SONNETT
(Special Assistant to Secretary of the Navy) asking to see him
today or tomorrow. They will make arrangements to see each other
sometime tomorrow.
10:55am CORCORAN to Judge THURMAN ARNOLD. CORCORAN said: "Now, I'm
meeting that fellow (EDDIE) on Wednesday and I hope you didn't
say anything to NEWTON the other night because I'm acting for an
undisclosed principle"(ARNOLD). ARNOLD then said: "What I said
to him was would he look up offices himself." They then discuss
the meeting to take place JULY 4th between EDDIE (LOMBARD), COR-
CORAN and ARNOLD to arrange for the leasing by ARNOLD of a build-
ing space for ARNOLD'S offices. CORCORAN said he had definitely
secured the space on the understanding that BOWEN (Phon.) could
occupy some of the space for a while. ARNOLD said: "This is the
greatest favor anybody did for me in my entire life."
C--I heard a radio program last night about how you were asked
to be the under-Secretary. Did you hear it? (DREW PEARSON'S
Sunday broadcast, 7/1/45)
A--That's the damndest thing I ever heard. I was in
C--All I'm calling you for this morning is to ask if you're still
serious. (about the office space CORCORAN obtained for him ?)
A--It wasn't under-Secretary. It was assistant secretary (of
Commerce) and I cannot afford to go back to $8,600 a year.
C--No, no.
A--And the funny part of it was that I came out of a conference
with (HENRY) WALLACE and went over to that Department and
it was only an hour afterward that DREW PEARSON had the
whole story--every word of it. He must have been hiding
under the couch. How does he get that stuff?
C--All I want to know is if I still have a principle. (He laughs)
A--You sure do! I haven't the slightest intention how does
DREW get that stuff? There were three people in the room.
WALLACE, SCHINDLER (Phon.) and myself.
C--He might have got it right straight from WALLACE.
A--He must have because the whole thing was word for word--what
I said, what I told WALLACE, what SCHINDLER said and what
WALLACE said. I don't know---that's the damndest thing I
