5:05pm HENRY GRUENWALD to CORCORAN, who says he "saw that lady." COR-
CORAN will see HENRY at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning.
5:07pm
CORCORAN to COHEN, saying he was on the Hill today and they all
know about COHEN'S name being mentioned. He said that LISTER had
heard and CLAUDE had heard of course, everybody's been expecting
"about this affair of yours." He said the advice he received
from both of them was, "Get that name down right away; that all
kinds of complications can get into an open wound like that.
"
COHEN replied that "they should say it to JIMMY" and not to him,
because "I'm no candidate". COHEN then stated that he was busy
and asked if he could contact CORCORAN in a few minutes.
Answer: Yes.
5:09pm
COHEN to CORCORAN (continuation of 5:07 p.m. conversation).
CORCORAN asked COHEN if he minded if he (CORCORAN) reported to
"him" what he (CORCORAN) heard. COHEN said he did not.
CORCORAN will try to contact "him" at his home.
5:10pm
CORCORAN to Mr. FOLEY (Executive offices, 410). FOLEY said "BOB"
had said he heard a rumor "out there" that WILL CLAYTON is going
to be Undersecretary of State. CORCORAN said CLAYTON is "trying
awfully hard to be." FOLEY asked if CORCORAN thought CLAYTON
would make it and CORCORAN replied that he didn't know; that he
would know more by tomorrow morning. O.K.
5:16pm
CORCORAN to "JUSTICE" JAMES F. BYRNES, congratulating him on his
appointment as Secretary of State. He said he has some messages
for him and wants to see him. BYRNES said COHEN is coming to see
him too. CORCORAN will be at BYRNES' apartment at the Shoreham
at six o'clock tonight.
6:50pm
WORTH CLARK to CORCORAN, who stated that YAGER, who was in COR-
CORAN'S office this afternoon, had a very good oil proposition
which had been given to him as a favor from VERNE TAYLOR, in
New York. CORCORAN said he thought CLARK might be interested.
CLARK said it sounds as though it's worth investigating. CORCORAN
said he would call up CLARK tomorrow morning. CLARK said not to
as the Utility thing has blown wide open. LYLE BARREN (Phon.) is
scared as someone has got to CLARENCE LEA (Congressman from
California, Chairman of Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee)
to stop the investigation and LYLE is Chairman of this sub-com-
mittee as I told you CLARENCE is sort of put the thumb on him so
he (CLARK) is picking up LYLE at 9:20 and going over to see CLAR-
ENCE. He added that he spoke to CLARENCE this PM on the phone
and as they made him mad he is going to force this thing through.
Added that CLARENCE is hard to force and he doesn't want to get
in this whole damn thing with his committee. CLARK said he spoke
to CLINT ANDERSON (Secretary of Agriculture) at some length and
