Washington, D. C.
July 9, 1945
10:05am NASON to RAY L. JONES, Foreign Funds Control, Ext. 2910, in
Treasury Department. Not in.
10:14am
CORCORAN to DONALD S. RUSSELL (Special Assistant to Secretary
of State BYRNES) at White House. TOM will come over to see him
at once at Room 1257-A, R.F.C.
10:15am TOM CORCORAN to JIM CLEMENTS, Aide to Senator PEPPER. TOM will
send flowers to Senator PEPPER's father's funeral and will call,
at suggestion of JIM, Senator PEPPER at Tallahassee, Florida,
1068-W.
10:25am CORCORAN to CHARLES MERKESON at Room 728 at the Carlton. CORCORAN
said, "You saw what happened?" (Reference is to the death of
J. W. PEPPER, father of Senator CLAUDE PEPPER) They agree that
PEPPER probably will not return until Thursday of this week.
CORCORAN said, "That means you and I gotta improvise some strategy."
MERKESON said, "That's right" and "I better come on over because
everything being equal I'm trying to get ready to run over to
New York to see HARRY. MERKESON will come over to see CORCORAN
at 11:00 A.M.
10.28am FRANKLIN S. WOOD to TOM CORCORAN. The following conversation took
place:
C--What I want to tell you is--you remember that fellow who had
lunch with ED? Well those things are really cookin'.
W--Well, they have been purchased. That's what I called you about.
C--Well, if they're purchased they will likely be used.
W--The present program is apparently that they will be purchased--
at least they've been committed for them. Whether the
checks have passed doesn't matter because they're all com-
mitted for them. And there seems to be some idea that
maybe he's going to reduce them from three to two.
C--Yeah.
W--Now you do everything possible, Tom, to--well your source of
information ought to be your friend BEN.
C--Yeah, and he's seeing them on Tuesday.
W--No. I understand he's got some--he won't see them probably
but he has some contact with the art department and is going
down there to talk to him isn't he?
C--Yeah.
W--So, I don't know whether there's anything can be done or not.
Now I talked to CHARLIE. CHARLIE wrote--I think I told you,
didn't I?
C--Yeah.
W--And CHARLIE thinks they're going to be submitted to him.
C--Yeah. Well, they are going to be.
