CO SUMMARY Washington, D. C. August 4, 1945 11:55am CORCORAN to MONROE OPPENHEIMER asking how things went with (ARNOLD) KIEHN. OPPENHEIMER said O.K.; that the chief thing they wanted to know was whether he borrowed it and why he borrowed from individuals instead of the company. He answered questions O.K.; seemed a little disturbed but unnecessarily so. MONROE says CALLAN (Phon.) thinks it will go and not to call MOSCOWITZ any more. O.K. 12:10pm CORCORAN to Senator PEPPER. They are seeing each other for dinner tonight. CORCORAN said that he is going to do some more checking at the State Department. PEPPER said he has a man from the State Department with him now and "we're" working on "it" now. (The "it" is apparently a European tour because PEPPER named a number of European cities and arriving and departure times. PEPPER said he thought he might be invited to address the World Labor Congress in Paris. While PEPPER was naming the places to which he is going, CORCORAN interrupted and told him not to mention anything about this at dinner tonight as CORCORAN doesn't want his wife to know he's thinking about this. (He is apparently considering going with PEPPER. ) In reply to a question from CORCORAN, PEPPER said he hadn't heard anything more about JOSH's (LEE ?) matter at the State Department. CORCORAN then asked if PEPPER had learned any more about JOSH'S "KIEHN matter" at the State Department. PEPPER said he hasn't, but he will call over there before 10'clock. CORCORAN told him that (FREDERICK) LYONS is there, but that MILLER and HOLMES are gone for the day. PEPPER will try to locate MILLER. 12:20pm MR. FOLKS (Senator PEPPER's Secretary) told CORCORAN he had just received a call from BARNEY FLYNN (Phon.) who wanted to know who is handling the Surplus investigation for TOM CLARK. FOLKS said that flynn has a lot of information about surpluses in general he wants to spill. CORCORAN will find out who is handling it and advise FOLKS. 2:45pm CHARLES MURCHISON from Jacksonville, Florida to CORCORAN. CORCORAN advised MURCHISON that his boyfriend (Senator PEPPER ?) was leaving the following day; however, he had been over to visit some unknown individual in connection with their project (Apparently referring to their attempts to obtain a civil aeronautics franchise for overseas operation). CORCORAN stated that the Number 1 man was leaving and even though some of the people were against it they would attempt to settle the matter before he left. 9:30pm FRANCIS to WORTH CLARK who is dining at CORCORAN'S. They discuss each other's health. CLARK told him that (LESLIE) BIFFLE (Sec- retary of Senate) is going to the White House on Wednesday.
