TOM then said that in connection with NELSON's (ROCKEFELLER) resignation, he(TOM) had hired JOHNNY (McCLINTOCK) to make a trip "down where you're going on the other things I've got in here, including United Fruit and a lot of other things, and that he'd go down to travel with you to be able to get your advice on these other things I'm interested in." TOM said, "I'm putting him on BILL's (YOUNGMAN) and my own situation here for a trip from October 1st to February 1st." TOM said that NELSON had advised him to take JOHNNY. TOM said he supposed DAVE knew that "they've stopped buying down in that continent as of October lst." DAVE said that was expected. TOM said he just wanted DAVE to know that JOHNNY is available to DAVE and that "he is on somebody else's payroll." DAVE told TOM to be sure and get a vacation. 10:40 AM Senator SMATHERS, Atlantic City, to CORCORAN. The OPA has tried every way in Christendom to break that quota but they still have an enormous sugar quota, which is one of the very valuable factors in the case. This fellow CAPLIN came to me through an Irish friend of mine named EDDIE DONOVAN. EDDIE DONOVAN has been trying to find a way to work out sugar requirements, syrup requirements for several big soft drink companies. Among them is this outfit--
