YOUNGMAN to DON HARDING, F.E.A., 2838. YOUNGMAN said that T. V.
(SOONG) is staying until Friday but Mrs. SOONG might Teave. T. V.
is to get 20% on the deal with the Canadians and will entail
$50,000,000. They discuss bargaining with the United States for
a like or better bargain. YOUNGMAN plans to go to Boston tonight
and to return Sunday night.
10:20 AM
TOM CORCORAN to DAVE CORCORAN in Bermuda. TOM offered birthday con-
gratulations. TOM then said that in connection with NELSON's
(ROCKEFELLER) resignation, he(TOM) had hired JOHNNY (McCLINTOCK)
to make a trip "down where you're going on the other things I've
got in here, including United Fruit and a lot of other things, and
that he'd go down to travel with you to be able to get your advice
on these other things I'm interested in." TOM said, "I'm putting
him on BILL's (YOUNGMAN) and my own situation here for a trip from
October 1st to February 1st." TOM said that NELSON had advised him
to take JOHNNY. TOM said he supposed DAVE knew that "they've stopped
buying down in that continent as of October lst." DAVE said that was
expected. TOM said he just wanted DAVE to know that JOHNNY is available
to DAVE and that "he is on somebody else's payroll." DAVE told TOM to
be sure and get a vacation.

Senator SMATHERS, Atlantic City, to CORCORAN. The following is their
conversation:
C - Now, I told those people to meet you tomorrow at l o'clock in this
particular place. Right?
S - Yeah. Well, the reason I called up was that I wanted to get your
slant on this thing.
C - Well, now let me tell you what the slant is. BILL, I think this is
an lawfully long shot, but I think it's a case of people who are
awfully scared and they might pay you desperately well for the
couple of days you spent on it, and if the long shot pulls out why
it's something else. The people that are involved in this are these:
The fellow that's promoting to do something to help these people is
a fellow named CAPLIN.
S - Yeah. That's what I wanted to ask you--whether you were dealing
with a lawyer or--
C - Now, let me tell you. No, I'm dealing with individuals. CAPLIN
is the sugar buyer for the Nehi Company, this soft drink outfit,
searching around to find some guy that would sell them syrup. They
ran on to this crowd in Lindhurst, (phonetic) New Jersey, and the
significant thing about it is this crowd in New Jersey had a hell
of a quota and they have still got a hell of a quota. The OPA has
tried every way in Christendom to break that quota but they still
have an enormous sugar quota, which is one of the very valuable
factors in the case. This fellow CAPLIN came to me through an Irish
friend of mine named EDDIE DONOVAN. EDDIE DONOVAN has been trying
to find a way to work out sugar requirements, syrup requirements
for several big soft drink companies. Among them is this outfit--
