Washington, D. C. October 26, 1945 CO SUMMARY 11:15 AM TOM CORCORAN to ED WHEELER at MEtropolitan 3475. WHEELER said he is to be called back into the Navy. He was notified to that effect Wednesday. CORCORAN can't understand this turn of events and says, "I'll talk to your father right now. If 11:16 AM TOM CORCORAN to Senator BURTON WHEELER. CORCORAN said he had talked to ED (WHEELER) and, "I understand that the Admiral didn't go along with you." WHEELER said no, and that the Admiral never did call and "I finally called him and asked him to come up here." WHEELER said the Admiral made one appointment and broke it and "Then I got hold of him again and he came up here yesterday at my request and he said what they'd do, he was very nice, but he said what they'd do was give him (ED WHEELER) two or three days off at a time. I said to him, 'I think it's a mistake because after all they're going to be criticizing him all the time, watching it and I think it's worse for the Navy and worse for him too. I think it's a mistake. 1 11 CORCORAN said, "I suppose this DREW PEARSON article scared the pants off him again as it (ED's Navy discharge) was all right at the beginning of the week." WHEELER said, "I said to him, 'I wish you'd take it up again with the other party' and he said he would." WHEELER a sked what the DREW PEARSON article said and CORCORAN explained that DREW "talked" about the Navy discharge policy and the Army discharge policy and about favors shown to Senator O'DANIEL's son and Senator WHEELER's son being allowed to go back to business. CORCORAN said, "Somebody over there has tipped PEARSON that this was coming and so had him put a convenient knee in the nuts." CORCORAN explained PEARSON's article was probably written Monday (when the decision was made to let ED out), and then it was "timed" to come out "and then these fellows go wabbling again." WHEELER said he had talked with "the Secretary" (FORRESTAL?) two days before that "and it was all right.' CORCORAN said he would "shake into the Secretary's office right away." WHEELER said the weakling in the affair was ap- parently DENFIELD but that the Admiral is weak too because "he told me he's talked with DENFIELD again." WHEELER asked, "Don't you think it would be a good idea for you to talk to him right away?" CORCORAN said he would despite the fact that tomorrow is "Navy Day". 11:23 AM TOM CORCORAN to LOWELL MELLETT at The Evening Star. The following con- versation took place: TC - I just wanted to thank you ever so much about what you did for ROBBINS (STANTON ROBBINS). LM - He got his session all right, did he? (Interview with White House Press Secretary) TC - I think so. He's gone out of town. I went out of town right after that. LOWELL, I want to ask you something. Do you think I ought to sue for libel on those articles? (Saturday Evening Post) LM - Let me see. Have I read two or three of them? I guess I've read two. I haven't read the third one.
