M 4. United Nations Situation: GROUND a. U.S. I Corps: The Command Post of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division was enroute to Yongsan, The 8th U.S. Cavalry RCT began to relieve the 12th ROK Regiment about 3 miles east of Unsan. The 5th U.S. Cavalry RCT closed in the vicinity of Yongsan. The 7th U.S. Cavalry RCT, being relieved in Chinnampo by the 9th U.S. RCT of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division, was to move north and join the remainder of the Division. Units of the 24th U.S. Infantry Division continued to make significant gains in their westward advance, After the 27th British Commonwealth Infantry Brigade captured Chongju, the 21st U.S. Infantry RCT passed thru the city, overran an enemy battalion supported by 7 tanks, and advanced 10 miles westward. Supported by a successful air strike, the 5th U.S. Infantry RCT battled its way into Kusong against deter- mined resistance from 2 well dug-in and concealed hostile battalions, supported by armor. The 19th U.S. Infantry RCT was assembling in the vicinity of Kasan. The 1st ROK Division was heavily engaged, repulsing 5 sharp counterattacks and inflicting heavy loss on the enemy. Elements of the 15th ROK Regiment attempting to contact elements of the 19th ROK Regiment was moving south. The 12th ROK Regiment repulsed 3 enemy attacks in an area about 5 miles northwest of Unsan; the right flank withdrew approximately 1,000 yards; the Regiment counterattacked and restored the positions. (FECOM) (SECRET) b. ROK II Corps: The Corps assumed operational control of the 7th ROK Division at 0001/29 (KT). The 8th Regiment of the Division was enroute to Tokchon to secure the Corps' right flank. The 3d Regiment was enroute to Kujang, while the 5th Regiment was being relieved by elements of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Division. In the 6th ROK Division sector, the 7th Regiment ordered to attack southward and rejoin the Division, was last reported 6 miles south of Kojang. Elements of the 19th Regiment were moving south toward Unsan. The remainder of the Division was assembling in the vicinity of Tamgi. In the 8th ROK Division sector, the 16th and 21st Regiments were in an area 6 to 11 miles east of Unsan, The remainder of the Division was regrouping in an area 11 miles to the south. U.S. X Corps: The 18th Regiment of the ROK Capitol Division was reported approximately 10 miles south of the Fusen Reservoir In the 3d ROK Division sector, elements of the 26th Regiment were reported 10 miles south of the Chosin Reservoir.
