C. IX US Corps: A tank patrol of the 2d US Division encountered an undetermined number of enemy five miles northwest of Kumhwa. In this vicinity, three friendly tanks were damaged by mines. One hundred eighty-nine rounds of mortar and artillery fire fell in the Division sector. The Netherlands Battalion relieved elements of the 38th Regiment in positions five miles northeast of Chorwon. Patrols of the 2d ROK, 40th US, and 3d ROK Divisions reported engagements with enemy groups of squad to platoon strength. The enemy was particularly sensitive to patrols in the 3d ROK Division sector; seven patrol contacts were reported in this zone. (FECOM) (SECRET) d. X US Corps: The 7th ROK and 25th US Divisions reported patrol contacts with platoon=size enemy groups. There was no contact with the enemy in the 1st US Marine Division sector. One hundred thirty-one rounds of mortar and artillery fire fell in the 7th ROK Division sector; 1,590 rounds in the 25th US Division sector; 624 rounds in the 1st US Marine Division sector. Naval and Marine aircraft flew a total of 335 sorties, including 178 from VALLEY FORGE and ANTIETAM on the least coast, 24 from BAIROKO on the west coast, 13 by Patrons, and 120 by shore-based USMC. East coast carrier aircraft struck rail, road and water transportation tar- gets from Songjin to Wonsan and inland to Chosin, destroying 90 boats. West coast carrier aircraft struck buildings and troop shelters near Chinnampo, Hanchon and Sinchon. 1st MAW flew 4 close support sorties for 1st MarDiv. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET) g. On the east coast, MOORE, DOYLE, and LOWRY bombarded targets in the vicinity of Songjin, Tanchon and Chaho; SILVERSTEIN fired on Hungnam; McGINTY, EDMONDS, MANCHESTER and FOX hit Wonsan. ST. PAUL, HIGBEE and ISBELL fired on troop and gun positions at Kojo and near the bombline. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET) h. On the west coast, CAYUGA and COSSACK bombarded troop- occupied villages and gun positions on the Hwanghae Peninsula and in the Haeju approaches. (COMNAVFE) (SECRET)
