3:35 P.M.
July 24,1952
I just had a telephone conversation with Governor Stevenson
at 3:30 o'clock. He called me and asked me if the situation
developed to the point where he would be put in nomination
would it embarrass me, If it would he would not allow it to
happen. I told him it not only would not embarrass me but
that it would please me in every way, that 1 have no commit-
ments and if he is nominated I would put forth every effort
possible to see that he às elected and he will never hear from
me after the election is over unless he sends for me,
He expressed happiness and appreciation for, this statement
and said that he would not be at the airport to meet me tomorrow
when I arrived in Chicago because the Chairman of the National
Committee had advised him it would be better if he were not at
the airport. I told him not to worry about that because those
things didn't bother me in the slightest. He seemed to be in a
very happy frame of mind and I told him that I was very sure
that he would not only be put in nomination but that he would be
nominated,
