CHAMBERS OF Letuis TB. Schtwellenbach 6 2 . United States Bistrict Tudge SPOKANE, WASHINGTON July 22, 1942 Honorable Harry Truman United States Senator Washington,D.C. Dear Harry: I had three of the members of the Truman Committee here over the week end and I certainly enjoyed visiting with them, particularly Carl. I am inclined to doubt whether Carl is really strong enough to be touring the country on a trip of this kind. I noticed that, while he started out with full pep in the morning, by night time he was pretty tired. They went through the various war plants here and then went on to Grand Coulee yesterday and today, I guess, they are at Boeing's and the Bremerton Navy Yard. Your committee is doing a fine job and it certainly is nice to contemplate the fact that the name "Truman" has re- ceived more publicity, and certainly more favorable publicity, than any other name in the national Congress. I spent the month of June back in Milwaukee helping out Ryan Duffy on his badly congested calendar. I had a fine time, got rid of a large number of cases for him and we had a nice visit during that period of time. He is perfectly delighted with his job and hasn't a care in the world. The Mintons came out from Indiana for a couple of days. I needn't tell you how much I enjoyed that. I think Shay is becoming a little more reconciled to his job although he gets restless every once in a while about not being in the thick of things. I don't know whether he intends to run for the Senate again in '44 or not. Probably by that time he will have become sufficiently adjusted to his new place that he won't want to make the race. We talked about you a: lot and both felt very proud of the record you have made for your- self in the last year and a half. I am hopeful that, as a result of your committee's visit and also the visit of the subcommittee on Military Affairs, more attention will be paid to the Pacific Coast.
