INVESTIGATING NATIONAL DEFENSE PROGRAM

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN OF THE RADIO AUDIENCE:
"Nothing now is more important than the defense program.
Our very existence as a democratic nation depends on that
and the speed and efficiency with which it is carried out.
"A great deal has been accomplished to date, but not
nearly enough, and not nearly as much as we shall have to
have in the future in order to insure the success of our
undertaking
"The Under Secretary of War, Mr. Patterson, testified
recently before the Senate Committee Investigating the
National Defense Program, of which I am Chairman, that not
more than "15 per cent of America's endeavors is devoted
to defense work. it That is a relatively puny effort when
contrasted with Germany's use of half her total production
for war purposes. The time has long since passed when the
ability and power of the German nation can be treated
lightly. We are now in general agreement in the United
States that we must devote an ever - -increasin share of our
resources to the defense effort, no matter how mach that
may dislocate our normal production for everyday needs.
