AT THE 129th ANNUAL COMMUNICATION
OF THE GRAND LODGE OF TENNESSEE
ON JANUARY 27, 1943
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE
TO BE RELEASED ON DELIVERY
Brethren and friends, it is a great privilege to be the guest this
evening at this 129th Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Tennessee and
to join with my Masonic brothers and their vast legion of friends in this cele-
bration. The Grand Lodge of Tennessee and its constituent Lodges are steeped in
traditions. You may well be proud of your steadfast fidelity, loyalty and devo-
tion to God and our country. You have given us three Presidents - Andrew Jackson,
James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson. My pride is understandable in recalling the
close Masonic connection between Missouri and Tennessee. Our first charters came
from Pennsylvania, After the Grand Lodge of Tennessee was constituted, Missouri
gave up its Pennsylvania charters and accepted them from Tennessee. Hence it was
Tennessee chartered Lodges which formed our Grand Lodge in Missouri in 1821.
My home county is named for your distinguished Grand Master, a great
American - Andrew Jackson. The history of America, its fight for freedom , its
growth to the country we now know, and the history of Masonry in America is one
and the same. Again today, when American freedom is in peril, when America is
being attacked on every side -- in the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Carribean -
when American lives are being lost and American ships are being sunk, Masons and
their sons are fighting -- as they have always fought in the past, with honor
and with glory.
This world-wide war will determine for generations to come whether we
`will live in a world of democracy and individual liberty, or in a world enslaved,
brutalized, and terrorized by barbarous aggressors. The pattern is clear, the
enemy has embarked on a path of world-wide conquest -- the ultimate goal the
TRUMAN
complete and utter subjugation of all nations of the world. He has challenged
