IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JULY 8, 1947
The President today sent the following to the heads of
Executivo Departments and Agencies:
"The fall compaign for the Community Chest Federation-
National Capital Aroa will mark the twonticth year in which
Government employees and other residents of the metropolitan
area have beon asked to support our Community Chests.
The Federation is an organization composed OI the six
Community Chests in the metropolitan area, comprising wel-

fare agencies which are united for bettor community service

and for the purpose of reising the necessary funds through
one single annual campaign rether then through many appoals
by individua. agencies.
The strength and health of every community demend
sociel services of wide variety. Day in and day out
the
agencies of the Federation holy our less fortunate neighbors
and fellow workers to meet problems too grent for them to
bear alone. They work constantly to prevent crime and
delinquency. They safeguard and rebuild homes and family
life. They fight disease. Thoy form a constant bulwerk of
protection for the welfere of children, yours as woll as
those less privileged.
For this twentieth campaign I have approved the appoint-
ment of the Honorable W. John Kenney, tho Assistant Secrotary
of the Navy, as chairman of the Govornment Unit and I ask that
you givo him the fullest measure of support and assistance.
Knowing that you feel healthy communities make a hoalthy
nation, I request all persons in authority in the offices of
the Fedoral and District Govornments in the National Capital
Area to extend their full cooporation to the coming compaign.
This cooperation should include both the orgenization of
effective solicitation and the setting up of en adequate col-
lection method for the convenience of those who wish to make
subscriptions on an installment basis.
In asking all officials and employees to give generously,
I
call your attention to the fact that for private humanitarian
sorvices the Community Chest plan is conceded to be the best
method yet formed for reising, handling and budgeting the funds
of contributors. The Chest unites all races, creeds, and
social groups in a cooporative offort to meet urgent human
needs.
