IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCTOBER 1, 1945
The President has addressed the following letter to the
Honorable Harry L. Hopkins:
"October 1, 1945
"Dear Mr. Hopkins:
"I have your letter of September twenty-
ninth and approve the action taken by the committee
appointed by me at the meeting of September fifth.
"Now that your recommendations have been
made, we can all proceed to take speedy action to
set up a national memorial worthy of the historic
achievements in war and peace of the late illustrious
President.
"Very sincerely,
"HARRY S. TRUMAN."
Following is the text of the letter addressed to the
President by Mr. Hopkins on September 29, 1945:

"Dear Mr. President:

"On September 5, 1945 at the first meeting of the
Roosevelt National Memorial Committee, you designated a com-
mittee consisting of the undersigned as Chairman, Fleet Admiral
William D. Leahy, Honorable Henry Morgenthau, Jr., Honorable
Frances Perkins and Honorable Frank C. Walker.
"The functions of your Committee were to designate
permanent officers of the General Committee, enlarge its member-
ship, and call its next meeting.
"Pursuant to that delegation of authority, we have
nominated the following officers:

Honorary President - Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt

- George E. Allen
Vice Chairmen
- Cordell Hull

"It is recommended that the Chairman name the members
of the Executive Committee. We recommend that the number be ten.
"We also recommend that the Chairman, with the advice
of the Executive Committee, name from time to time additional
members of the General Committee.
"As soon as the necessary legal matters are consummated,
and plans prepared, there will be a meeting of the whole enlarged
General Committee to pass upon these recommendations.
"We trust that this will be satisfactory to you.
