IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MAY 23, 1946
The President has suggested to the Secretaries of
State and Agriculture that they jointly appoint a Committee
on Voluntary Foreign Aid to develop and recommend measures
to promote the efficiency of American Voluntary aid to
people in foreign countries.
Secretary of State James F. Byrnes and Secretary
of Agriculture Clinton P. Anderson have asked Charles P.
Taft of Cincinnati to serve as chairman of the Committee,
whose membership will bo announced later. Mr. Taft
previously served as a member of the President's War Relief
Control Board, now dissolved, which during the war administered
wartime regulations affecting American foreign war relief
agencies.
The Government's appeal to the public to conserve
food for famine relief has evoked many proposals for personal
donations as an expression of the humanitarian interest of
the American people in the welfare of war sufferers. The
Committee will be available to advise with the sponsors of
new projects as well as with existing private relief agencies
with a view to coordinating voluntary programs with those
under governmental auspices,
