IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JUNE 14, 1947
The President has sent the following letter to Dr. Ralph J.
Bunche, accepting his resignation as Commissioner of the United
States Section of the Caribbean Commission:
"June 9, 1947
My dear Dr. Bunche:
It is with regret that I accept your resignation as
Commissioner of the United States Section of the Caribbean
Commission on which you have so ably served.
The contribution which you have made to the progress
of the Commission, particularly during its organizational
period, has been outstanding.
Very sincerely yours,
HARRY S. TRUMAN."
Following is the text of Dr. Bunche's letter to the
President:
"May 15, 1947
Sir:
In view of my recent decision to accept a position
in the Secretariat of the United Nations, I am submitting
my resignation as United States Commissioner on the
Caribbean Commission. I take this action with deep regret,
since I have valued highly my position on the Commission
and have the highest regard for the work of the Commission
and for my fellow Commissioners. My work with the United
Nations will require all of my time, however, and it would
be neither practical nor helpful to the Commission for me
to continue as a Commissioner.
I wish you to know, sir, that I have appreciated
greatly the opportunity to serve you and my country in
this small way.
