IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MAY 13, 1948
The President today sent the following letter to the
Honorable Solon J. Buck, accepting his resignation as Archivist
of the United States:
"My dear Dr. Buck:
Your letter of May twelfth is before me. In accordance
with your request I accept, effective upon qualification of
your successor, your resignation as Archivist of the United
States.
The choice which you are making is indeed selfless.
It bears eloquent witness to your devotion to the pursuit
of history. In the new post as Chief of the Division of
Manuscripts and incumbent of the Chair of American History.
in the Library of Congress, you will be relieved of those
administrative duties which are oftentimes irksome to a
scholar.
I am sure you will find great happiness in your research
work in the Library and in guiding others in their studies
in American history.

Following is the text of Mr. Buck's letter to the
President:
"My dear Mr. President:
This is to tender to you my resignation as Archivist of
the United States, to be effective on the appointment and
confirmation of a successor.
My purpose in resigning is to enable me to accept the
position of Chief of the Division of Manuscripts and
incumbent of the Chair of American History in the Library of
Congress, which has been offered to me by the Librarian.
In view of the fact that this position is of lower rank in
the Government than the one I now hold, it should be obvious
that my motive is not personal advancement. It is rather a
desire to devote less of my time and energy to administration
and more to work for which I believe I am better fitted by
training and experience -- that is to research in American
history and the guidance and assistance of others in such
research.
I want to take this opportunity to express my appre-
ciation of the interest that you have shown in the National
Archives and of the support that you have given to its work.
I am confident that that interest and support will be con-
tinued and will continue to be beneficial to the causes of
efficient government and of American scholarship.
