    "ocrText": "SECRET GDS\nHenze Report -- June 21, 1978\n-2-\nfrom members of Congress by mid-morning! He has promised\ninvestigation and corrective measures. Moynihan is parti-\ncularly irate. Doubt that you need to get into it directly\nat this point, but a couple of congressmen should have called\nyou as a result of effort I launched in response to your\noriginal request.\n(c)\nLunched with Leonard Marks, just back from BIB Munich meetings.\nHe reported that Rita Hauser behaved as enfant terrible,\nagitating for doing away with RFE and drastically changing\nRL. Markoe also advocated abandoning RFE, maintaining it\nis a waste of money -- he is apparently smarting under FTC\nsuit against Listerine which his company (Werner-Lambert)\nproduces. Quinn, Pell's man on BIB, was on all sides of\nevery issue. Gronouski, still recovering from his 12\nbroken ribs (!) had more on his hands in Munich than he\nwanted -- but according to Leonard, except for Rita and\nMarkoe, the meetings went well and RFE/RL is in better\nshape, with Ralph exercising strong influence, than it has\nbeen in for years. Leonard had a lot of political observa-\ntions and comments on present state of u.s. foreign relations\nwhich I will pass on to you at some convenient time. He wants\nyou to know that he is strongly behind you in current contro-\nversies. (e)\nReceived letter from Bill Griffith from Tokyo with series of\ncapsule observations on his travels so far. Says he has also\nwritten you.\nSignificant Information:\nPM Ecevit has sent very warm letter to President Carter\n-- Turks told our Embassy in Ankara he personally reworked\nforeign ministry draft and took the letter very seriously.\nIt is clear that he feels he has special rapport with the\nPresident. He arrived in Moscow today on visit, but no\nnews of that yet. (e)"
