SECRET GDS Henze Report -- June 21, 1978 -2- from members of Congress by mid-morning! He has promised investigation and corrective measures. Moynihan is parti- cularly irate. Doubt that you need to get into it directly at this point, but a couple of congressmen should have called you as a result of effort I launched in response to your original request. (c) Lunched with Leonard Marks, just back from BIB Munich meetings. He reported that Rita Hauser behaved as enfant terrible, agitating for doing away with RFE and drastically changing RL. Markoe also advocated abandoning RFE, maintaining it is a waste of money -- he is apparently smarting under FTC suit against Listerine which his company (Werner-Lambert) produces. Quinn, Pell's man on BIB, was on all sides of every issue. Gronouski, still recovering from his 12 broken ribs (!) had more on his hands in Munich than he wanted -- but according to Leonard, except for Rita and Markoe, the meetings went well and RFE/RL is in better shape, with Ralph exercising strong influence, than it has been in for years. Leonard had a lot of political observa- tions and comments on present state of u.s. foreign relations which I will pass on to you at some convenient time. He wants you to know that he is strongly behind you in current contro- versies. (e) Received letter from Bill Griffith from Tokyo with series of capsule observations on his travels so far. Says he has also written you. Significant Information: PM Ecevit has sent very warm letter to President Carter -- Turks told our Embassy in Ankara he personally reworked foreign ministry draft and took the letter very seriously. It is clear that he feels he has special rapport with the President. He arrived in Moscow today on visit, but no news of that yet. (e)
