Autopsy Protocol Louis F. Rich 37 W/M EXTERNAL EXAMINATION: The body is that of a thin, white male measuring 5 ft. 7 in. in length and weighing 117 lbs. He appears the recorded age of 67 years There are no external marks of violence on the body. The pupils are equal. The ears, nose and mouth show no abnormalities The trachea lies in the mid- line. There is a marked scoliosis of the spine. The abdomen is flat. There are early sacral decubiti measuring 1 in. in diameter. The lower extremities show marked muscular atrophy. The feet are very dirty. There are crusted abraded areas over the volar aspects of the right forearm. BODY CAVITIES: The usual Y-shaped incision is made. The viscera lie in their usual positions. There is no abnormal accumulation of blood or fluid. CARDIO-VASCULAR SYSTEM: The heart weighs 295 grams. There is moderately severe atherosclerosis but no occlusion is present at any point. There is no infarction, old or recent. The valves are normal. The aorta shows moderate atherosolerosis. RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: The larynx and trachea are patent. The left lung weighs 675 grams. The right lung weighs 850 grams. Both lungs were partly adherent to the chest wall by fibrinopurulent adhesions, particularly the right lower lobe which is almost completely adherent to the chest wall by such lesions. On cut section into the lungs there are diffuse confluent bronchopneamonio areas with almost complete consolidation of the right lower lobe. In addition, there is marked emphysema of the entire lungs. ASTRO-INTESTINAL SYSTEM: The esphagus is intact. The stomach, small intestines and colon show no hemorrhage or ulceration. The liver is red-brown in color, normal in size and shape and on cut section shows moderate central congestion. The gall bladder is distended with bile. The pancreas is normal. SPLEEN: The spleen weighs 125 grams. On cut section the pulp is very soft. ADRENALS: These show no hemorrhage or necrosis. GENITO-URINARY SYSTEM: The both kidneys are normal in size and shape and pale reddish tan in color. There is no infection or hemorrhage. CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM: The scalp is reflected in the usual manner. The calvarium is removed. There is no hemorrhage in the scalp n or is there fracture of the skull. The dura is of normal translucency, The leptomeninges are thin and delicate. The brain weighs 1150 grams. There are no contusions or softenings in any part of the brain. The dura is striped from the base of the skull and no fractures are found. A small area of encephalomalacia is four in the right internal capsule and globus pallidus region. PROVISIONAL ANATOMICAL DIAGNOSIS: 1. Bilateral confluent bronchopneumonia 2. Arteriosclerosis, generalized. 3. Encephalomalacia, old, right internal capsule and globus pallidus. 4.
