WHO BUILT WASHINGT
A Symposium on the Historic Developme
Washington, D.C.
May
The Latrobe Chapter of the Society of Architectural Historians is seeking papers on the architects,
engineers, planners, developers, policy makers, and others who helped create the built
environment of the Washington metropolitan area. We also encourage papers on government
agencies and programs that equally shaped the form of the metropolitan region. Papers may
cover the entire history of the region--from before the establishment of the national capital to the
present. The purpose of the symposium is to feature recent research in a format that encourages
comment and discussion.
The symposium will be held in Washington at the National Building Museum on Friday evening
and Saturday, March 7 and 8, 1997.
Papers must be analytical rather than descriptive in nature and will be grouped to provide
substantive comparative discussion among the presenters, moderators, and the audience. We are
looking for papers that place the contributions of the "builders" in a comparative context of
political, social, economic, and cultural forces. Abstracts will be provided at the symposium. We
shall be seeking opportunities to publish some or all of the papers.
Please send a concise but detailed 250-word abstract of a 20-minute paper, and your curriculum
vitae, postmarked by July 31, 1996 to:
Nancy Witherell
Latrobe Chapter, SAH
624 Maryland Avenue, NE
Washington, DC 20002
All applicants will be notified of the selection by September 16, 1996. February 1, 1997 is the
firm deadline for the completed text. After February 1, moderators will consult the presenters to
develop themes for discussion.
For further information, call Nancy Witherell at 202-543-8356.
