callod Mr. Georgo Groh, a reportor of the Corpus Chrinti and
told him of his conversation with Mr. konnedy, 1r. Groh then phoned
Mr. Konnody on tho somo night to gut the story for his papor. He in-
formod Mr. Konnody that hc wantod his vorsion of the story for publi-
cation. Ho askod if hc would rofuso the chapel for the Borvicos of
Folix Longoria and Konnody ropliod yos. He thon askod Mr. Konnody
twico if the rofusal was basod on the fact that Longoria was a Moxi-
can, and the undortaker ropliod yos, saying that "Wo have nover mado
a practice of lotting Mexicans use a chapol and VIG don't want to start
now." Mr. Kennody admitted making thoso remarks, but told the committo
that ho was "mad" at tho timo and rogrottod saying thom. Mr. Kennody
told both Mr. Groh and Mr. Thomos Sutherland of the Good Noighbor
Commission that the "Whitos might objoct" and statod to the invostiga-
tion committec that ho had usod "bad terninology."
Tho question of racial discrimination aroso and received wide
spread publicity due to l.r. T.W. Konnedy's statements to 1r. Goorgo
Groh, Dr. Hoctor P. Garcia, and lir. Thomas Sutherland. Mr. Kennedy
admittod saying that "The whitos might objoct" and lator publicly
spologized to the widow and hor sister for having made such romarks.
There is no evidonce that his words roflected the viows of the citi-
zens of Three Rivers. After publicity hed boon givon the evont in the
Corpus Christi paper, Mr. Konnedy and ropresentative citizons of Three
Rivers offerod honor and facility for the rointermont of the body.
The widow replied that she was grateful for thoir sontiment and held no
grudge but that their offor wes "still too late.
The statements of Lir. Goorge Groh, a disinterestod reporter are
indisputable and undeniable. I cannot look into tho heart of Mr.
Kennedy to ascortain his truo intent but can only accept his oral
words which appoar to no discriminatory.
