P: Who are you with tonight?
K: The Nieman Fellows. 40 of them. Kraslow and that. On a background
basis. I thought I could make some of the points we mentioned this afternoon.
P: The Nieman Fellows are people who become editors, etc.
K: These are already
P: My view in talking to them is to talk about the process.
K: I thought I would
P: I just read the NYT and I must say that it went pretty well
K: About the speech? The account on the editorial page?
P: Reston said it was a great speach. Do you know him? I don't
K: Yes, quite well and that's outstanding and I was just talking to Fulbright
and he said he had nothing to criticize.
P: I had in mind two things. The Neiman thing you are doing the right thing.
Say:
I am taking into account what hours the man takes and for days he read and
read in a broad field. History, philosophy. Then I had you buzz in to give
you an idea of what I was doing. They are all xxgdx writers and they should
know I know the agony of writing.
K: I found that giving them a little feel for the WH. The staff thinks it natural
of course but outsiders find it outstanding.
P: On Reston I though you might give him a ring. I read your thing and
wanted you to know who it came about. Then show him the files. And the
other fellow.
K: I may ask him in to lunch.
P: Don't be too obvious, I agree. So you can chat about the details. Stay
away from programs. The main thing is the spririt of the thing.
K: I think also that philosophical bent. You cannot have written what you
did without reflection.
