The President
5/1/70 5:00 p. m.
P: How are you getting along with the interviews?
K: It's quite remarkable. I've seen John Scalli. He said he was praying
for the President. He said this is courageous and I'm just afraid they will tear
him to pieces, and I hope you have great success.
P: "They" being domestic critics?
K: Yes.
P: But they haven been as bad as we expected *have they?
K: No. I had Semple and Oberdorfer in.
P: Oh good God.
K: I didn't line this up. But they were extremely respectful.
P: Ziegler was wrong in that. I gave orders that nobody from the Post
was ever to come in again. Semple was fine, but nobody from the Post.
K: Well, I'm just telling you they were very respectful. They ask the
question isn't this just temporary; won't they be back?
P: You, say it buys us the time that we need to make decisive moves.
K: Yes. The operation is just starting up again.
PL To go in with the enemy gone, that's damn good.
K: If we photograph caches and say all right, did you want Americans killed?
P: That's right.
K: Either way, even with a few casualties, we come out all right. They
words were quite respectful this morning. It has touched a patriotic streak in
these cynical men.
P: We must remind them that this was something that didnt have to be done.
K: I've been riding hell out of that story. We know what the Post and NYT
will say in their editorials tomorrow morning.
P: We don't give a tinker's damn what they say. It doesn't matter. I'm not
even going to read it. We got to the people. Good, get some rest this weekend.
