TELCON Haldeman/Kissinger 10:50 am 5/2/70 K: The President wanted me to call you. H: What he wanted me to give you was the result of a poll we took yesterday by phone. 1025 interviews, which is an accurate sample on a national basis. On the question of whether they support the statement 65% support it, 22° oppose it, and 15 % don't know. K: That's higher than the withdrawal speech. The oppose are smaller. H: It's 3 - 1 support. Very strong support. K: He said if he got 52 % he would be doing well. H: Ifxthex The next question was the usual "Do you approve of the way the President is conducting his job? 11 Prior to the April 20 speech 59 % approved, after the speech 62 % approved, and now we are back to 59 %. Statistically it means it's kept the same. The significant thing is a polarization between men and women. Men went up and women went down. We can't discuss we will use some of these figures but we shouldn't range them out too widely. Write this down: This Poll Last Week Very favorable 30 24 Somewhat favorable 31 44 Somewhat Unfavorable 17 16 Unfavorable 14 9 Don't know 8 7 That shows favorable went from 68 to 61. K: But the favorable went way up. When you drop from a withdrawal announce- ment to a troop committment announcement in 8 points, that's damn good. H: Favorable is still 2 - 1. Men were: V.F. 38 25 S.F. 27 44 .U. 15 16 U. 14 9 D.K. 6 6 Women were: V.F. 20 24 S.F. 36 45 S. U. 19 15 II. 14 D:K. 11 of
