Mr. Friday (President of U.N.C.)
5/9/70 9:14 a. m.
F: Just two comments I wanted to make. First, I think it's important
to get a copy of the transcript on the press conference to those AAU presidents.
K: The group we met with?
F: I would go beyond that and suggest to send it to all the 45.
K: It might be a good thought for Heard to do that.
F: That's right. and also it would be good for him to write to the pres -
idents of the AAU and say that when they come to Washington he is there to
listen to them. . I think the President was very effective last night in the
attitude he put over. He clarified that he and the students had common objec-
tives and his phrasing that when the action gets hot the rhetoric should get cool
was very good. Third, when he talks to the Governors, I hope he will discuss
the national guard issue. He isn't the one who calls out the National Guard.
He touched on that but I think he should make it clearer. I'm sorry to trouble you
K: You never trouble me. I think the meeting yesterday was one
of the most effective I've attended.
F: Well, the reporters called me last night. They asked about the comment
I
made on the 4000 students. H said he was an attentive and responsive listener.
K: Thank you for calling; let's stay in touch.
