    "ocrText": "Neustadt/Kissinger\n12:23 pm\n6/9/70\n-2-\nN: What I do want to do if I can go off the record with you -- I have proceeded\non the assumption that you will find you cannot come back.\nK: If we end the war by Feb. then I don't intend to stay long after that.\nN: But if things are iffy -- there's a large chance things are like that.\nWhile\nNat and John are the powers I am going to keep hounding Jim and Sam to have\na firm understanding about the budget after Feb.\nK: I see.\nN: I think that can be done and it should be done by this administration at\nHarvard before there's a new one SO that Harvard is protected.\nK: That's very generous.\nN: That's my private campaign. One thing that has worried me is that if you\nf\nind yourself there 2 - 3 years more and as time goes by they fill the vacancy\nand you want to come back\nin the dep artment/ That's got to be taken care of before Feb. It's the\ndepartment's problem and I am the committee on that. I don't know if the\nWashington bureau was standing on it's own but I wanted you to know\nK: I have not made any comments and on my staff only my assistant was\npresent and I have total confidence in him.\nN: I only felt kixisx you thought we were threatening.\nK: No, I thought you were my friends -- or at least a quorum and that made\nthe meeting painful. If I left in Feb. a new ballgame would open up after that.\nI was also not sure I want to come back.\ndifferent\nN: That's your problem. We have a to make sure that\nyou have a free choice.\nK: I appreciate it very much.\nN: One thing that I am xxxxxx in a state about is that these two things be made\nabsolutely distinct. That no matter what the Administration does it has nothing\nto do with you as a teacher and scholar. I hppe you understand.\nK: I appreciate this very much. If you come to Washington again let me know.\nN: Probably sometime this summer.\nK: When you do, will you let me know?"
