TELCON Scally/Kissinger 10:55 a. m. 10/8/70 S: Did you watch or listen or read the commentaries afterward? K: You were fair. You are a good man. I think you are the most thoughtful commentator. S: The first phone call I got was from a woman in Va. saying that my anti-Nixon bias was showing. K: You were fair. There's a slight nuance between you and me but that's your job. You were thoughtful. The others were jazzing it up. The issue is not what they talk about but what we are proposing. S: When will we spell out what we want to enforce the in-place ceasefire. Do you think it's easier for private meetings now? K: Strictly for you, yes. S: Hopefully. K: The way they negotiate -- what do you expect? It's about standard. They get credit then, later. S: What were we thinking of? K: Indochina, Malaysia, Burma, etc. S: All in all you must be pleased about the reaction from the Senate. The only voice of criticism was from Stennis. K: I couldn't believe it. S: I wanted to chat with you. K: I listened to you mostly and you were the best. CBS was the worst. I told the President that I thought you did a superb job. S: Thank you. Hope to see you soon.
