Admiral Zumwalt
6/17/71 9:15 a. m.
Z:
calling about the developments in Malta and Iceland.
has had a shift; it looks like the ruling party won't be able to maintain a majority.
Both places are critical to us. Minthoff has won by one vote though there is
some danger of a recount shifting that. Already in terrible trouble.
K: What do you think we can do?
Z: Former Ambassador Feldman has been working hard on this and is as
close to Minthoff as anyone. He certainly would be an improvement over the
present fellow. If anything could be done
I know this is way out of my
field.
K: No, I appreciate it.
Z: We have got to do that, even if it costs us money.
K: Money is the easiest commodity to come up with.
Z: My personal recommendation is to have Feldman brought in and tasked
directly by you to see what can be salvaged. The Iceland thing isn't as clear.
But I believe a study there on the prospective changes in these two strategic
places through the NSSM route would be a good idea.
K: That's a good idea. I'11 trigger a study on both of them.
Z: And find out what Minthoff really thinks.
K: Let me get to the President.
Z: Okay, thank you sir.
K: Thank you.
