TELCON Otis Chandler/Mr. Kissinger 8:05 p. m. , November 29, 1971 K: I am calling you about the December 6 date. The difficulty is that is the day that Trudeau is coming to Washington. I had it nearly arranged to come out and then the only convenient date for the two heads of government in December turned out to be next Monday. C: Sure, sure. K: If there is anything the Times or the Chandler family wants -- C: Your schedule must be very busy. K: I was going to say given advance warning but in this case, even advance warning wouldn't have helped. C: I was going to call you a long time ago and didn't and then I decided maybe by chance you might be free. K: In this case it literally would have made no difference. This meeting with Trudeau finally gelled. C: What country is President Nixon not going to meet with? K: I am going to handle Princess Grace. C: Yes, and you will do well. You prefer that to Prime Minister Golda Meir? K: I almost think SO. C: I think your son wasn't SO far off. K: Ron Ziegler called my son tonight and told him we announced the Peking trip today. His first question was, "When is it? 11 C: You will be busy with these trips. He is meeting with everybody. K: We have to show that our allies will be seriously consulted. C: Your reports any more credible about the India/Pakistan situation? We can't send anyone in; we can't find out what the hell is going on?
