TELCON
Senator Javits/Mr. Kissinger
7:35 p.m., March 1, 1973
K:
Jack, I tried to get you -- yesterday I was all tied up with the POW thing.
J:
Yes, I know. Well, it's all right. You tried me this morning and I
tried you and you were busy. Anyway, I had my conversation with the
Governor this morning and we're both going to look into it. He had some
survey figures that he gave me, which was not too surprising from
New York, and he'd like to see this happen but he realizes that there is
a very, very long chance of it. And I told him that I would explore it
down here in my own way.
K:
I was rather favorably inclined when I thought about it.
J:
Um-humm.
K:
And I talked to Ehrlichman and he said that the President really meant
it, whatever, you know, that means in your decision.
J:
Yes. Well, if I should seriously entertain it, I'd certainly have to get
a lot more than that. I'd have to know what kind of thing might
conceivably be done. It's not just a campaign thing, you know. I think
I can get elected if I choose to go that route with or without the President's
endorsement but I think it's a question of what's to be done for New York.
K:
Right.
J:
So I'll probably have a glimpse of you there at the party and maybe have
a word together.
K:
Right.
J:
Listen, by any chance -- Marion's here and Max and Marge Fisher are
coming for a glass of champagne after the affair would you like to
come ?
It's just going to be the four of us.
K:
No, I'd love to come but I can't because there's a farewell party for
Dick Helms which I promised I'd do my damnest to get there.
J:
Oh, sure, sure. Well, I'll have a word with you there. Wait a minute,
Marion wants to say hello to you.
Mrs. J:
Henry, you're a Vogue man.
K:
What do you mean?
Mrs. J:
You look so gorgeous in Vogue. That's it, you're going to be the Vogue ma:
