TELCON Amb. Robert Murphy/Kissinger 10:40 a. m. - 5/1/73 K: Hello. M: Oh, Henry. Bob. K: Bob. M: Listen Henry, I'm sorry to break in on you. I just want to ask you a question about that Bilderberg meeting. I'm so pleased that you have decided not to go under the circumstances. The question is, Henry, do you think, first of all, that the American delegation should refrain from attending. I'm talking quite impersonally because I had to decline and was not intending to go and I've always had a doubt about the selection of this place under the circumstances. But in the light of their attitude I don't think that our American group should attend. I was talking with the fellows this morning and they thought your judgement on this might be very useful if you could comment on it - just between us. K: Let me put it on a - I would not object if this were the result. M: Good, good, good. K: And I think from a foreign policy point of view it could only do good. M: Yes, and then K: On the other hand if you did go we'd understand. M: Oh, sure, yeh, yeh. Now there hasn't really been time for a good consideration - what I'm working on at the moment - Bill is calling them over there in Holland - is to see whether the whole thing can't be cancelled out for the moment, postponed or transferred to another place. The trouble is the meeting is scheduled for the 10th of May and the time's so short, but that's what I'd really like to see done. Don't you think that would be the best solution? K: That would be by far the best solution. M: Then it wouldn't put the onus on the American end of it. K: And then I'd make a major effort to come. M: Oh, good. Fine. That'd be great. Wonderful. Aren't they sons-of-bitches though, really you know.
