K: My personal judgment without having read the Young report
Young was on my staff and he did not inspire me
S: Didn't what?
K: He did not inspire me with confidence that what he did do would
be very serious or balanced. I would never have imagined he would be
given a responsible assignment like investigating the military. As I
have said publicly, I don't know about his investigations. That doesn't
change the fact that he was doing it, or apparently, according to
Krogh, was developing some damaging information. I mean, here was
a kid who was not doing very well working for me, thrown into the
Erlichman atmosphere. He may just have tried to prove how good
he was.
S: I don't know if we have to go through all of that. They can make
a nything appear to be true almost.
That's the trouble. There's nobody I would rather have investiage
this than you, Mr. Chairman.
S: Well, if we don't take some, if we don't do something. What do
you think of this I would ask you and Admiral Moorer to each,
separately write me a letter undertaking to tell how you feel about
this matter, say anything you want to. It might just be that it
would settle it, or two, wemight be able to settle it by asking the
two of you to come before the Committee and subject dyourselves to
questions.
K: Yes, the only problem, Mr. Chairman, is that my own direct
knowledge of this matter is extremely limited. It really is confined
to listening to 12-15 minutes of a taped interrogation of Admiral
Wellander. I would be glad to say that and what I know.
S: I am thinking of the
of your saying you have no grievance, what
you just said to me.
K: I would be happy to do that, Mr. Chairman.
S: It might just be that our Committee would be convinced that you
and Moorer worked together, had no grievance against one another
O ficially or per sonally and he was getting information anyway, then
SO far as you and Moorer were concerned it might satisfy the Committee
although whether we should insist on the military proceeding with
reference to the yeoman, etc.
