TELECON Jerry Schecter/Secretary Kissinger April 23, 1974 4:35 PM S: Hi, Henry, how are you? K: Jerry, how are you? S: Say, I haven't had a chance to congratulate you. That's terrific. I'm never going to joke with you again now. K: I give you a great scoop and you blow it. S: Well, you know, that's what happens when you try to realize that you're human. And try to let you have a little personal life. Everybody asked me why I wasn't in Acapulco and told them, well, I think I better let Henry take care of this one himself. K: Were you going to offer technical assistance. S: I don't think you need any. At any rate, I think it's really great news and I'm really delighted. K: That message I got about what you want to do, I think you got that (Reston) article totally wrong. First of all, it's totally untrue that Bruce has requested to return and I have a long cable from him X in which he denies it, is outraged by the story and claims that he's very happy. S: If you believe that he'll tell you another one. K: No, Ibelieve it. I tixk talked to him about before he left. Secondly, the fact of the matter is, our China policy is absolutely on course now. Whatever of problems of Chou maybe, the policy is totally on course. S: What does that mean? K: What it means is, that it is exactly on the course that it was outlined last November, that exchange programs will be starting again very soon and that all the signals are positive and that the conversation with (Teng) was an extremely positive conversation -- really designed for reassurance. This is on the background. S: What about -- what do you mean starting soon ? K: Well, starting within the next month or SO. S: I see. I gather you also been seeing other Chinese too ?
