K: I saw the Ambassador yesterday.
S: How did that go ?
K: Very well. I mean, it's all part of the same pattern.
S: Well, OK, but I mean the general thrust is, you know
K: Whatever Chou's problems may be, they have to do with domestic not foreign
policy. And even that I'm not in a clear position to say.
S:
In other words, my reading -- around town here the thrust was, well Henry's
kind of put the
on Chou's neck. Now it seems to me
K: Totally wrong.
S: That wrong. Well, my reading of that was, for goodness sakes that's not right.
He's taken the pressure off Chou and said, you know, after all Mao's the one who
made the xotxixx policy.
K: Exactly.
S: And that's the way you should read it.
K: It should be read as a reaffirmation of the existing policy regardless of who
is technically -- whose name is associated with it and it is a reaffirmation with
Mao's backing. And that is the XOX correct way. You're interpretation is
absolutely the correct one. It was one of the most positive conversations we've
had with the Chinese. I mean, you can't use this but just for your information.
S: The one with (Teng).
K: Yes. The other was really just a continuation of the first.
S: Is there any specific that I can point that ? Quite frankly, there's a lot of
disenchantment. It's very difficult to have a dialog with these people. If they're
isolated, they've isolated themselves here in Washington. The academic
community feels that this kind of
the people involved and
K: Yes, but Jerry, this is sort of the existing melee in the country in which one
can't bear the thought, you know, in which the thought that this thing may be working
you know, this is being said about the Soviets, it's said about everything.
S: But also, you know I mean, a policy gets support from people who are involved
aside from you. This is the a sort of consensus that came out of the Arian
Scholars Meeting up in Cambrigde a COUPLE of weeks ago.
