Admiral Moorer/Mr. Kissinger
March 20, 1971
K:
How would that be?
M:
That would be all right.
K:
Now what is your judgment, Tom, about the rate at which these guys
are going out?
M:
Well, I think that Lam is trying to get them out somewhat faster than
Thieu told him to, that's the way it looks to me but even so it's going
to take them several days to get out, the way it looks. It's a real
difficult thing to do of course, when you are in contact.
K:
But do you believe these news stories of routes and so forth?
that
M:
Oh, I don't think as a general statement, no. I think you will have
an isolated case of a platoon or something where they are falling back
rapidly. You always have things like that but I don't think the whole
operation is coming out like that and I'm going to talk to Abrams again
as soon as he gets up and see what I can find out about it.
K:
Do you think these South Vietnamese are going to be very demoralized
coming out as they do?
M:
Well, I don't think as a whole no. As I say, I think you will find a
bound to find isolated pieces where they are.
K:
Well, we've got to have a critique of the whole thing next week with
a small group.
M:
Yes, absolutely.
K:
What do you think?
M:
Yes, this morning I had them list -- we worked on battalion by battalion
to see how they performed and get an overview of their capability and
what they have now and so on.
K:
Yeah, I may get the senior people of WSAG together on Tuesday, do you
think that's the right time?
M:
Yes, that would be better for me cause I got a test (?) on Monday.
K:
All right, SO we'll get them together on Tuesday and just see where
we -- what we think we accomplished and where we think the minuses
are.
