NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL
SECREP/SENSITIVE/EYES ONLY
MEMORANDUM OF CONVERSATION
PARTICIPANTS:
The President
The Emperor of Japan
Ambassador Hideki Mazaki, Japanese Ministry of
Foreign Affairs (interpreter)
Mr. James J. Wickel, American Embassy Tokyo
(interpreter)
DATE, TIME,
September 26, 1971, 10:00 p.m.; Elmendorf AFB,
PLACE:
Anchorage, Alaska
SUBJECT:
President's Discussion with Emperor of Japan
In the car on the way to the Consul General's residence, the President
expressed privately the warm welcome he had just extended the Emperor
and Empress publicly in the arrival ceremony, and said that all Americans
shared his pleasure and sense of honor that the Emperor had made his
first stop in the United States on this historic first trip abroad by a reigning
Emperor of Japan.
The Emperor expressed deep personal appreciation to the President and
Mrs. Nixon for coming all the way to Alaska to greet him and his party,
and to the people of Alaska for the warmth of their welcome. He noted
that the weather in Anchorage was warmer than he had expected.
The President responded that this warm temperature, as well as the warm
welcome by the people of Alaska, characterized the close relations between
the United States and Japan.
The Emperor expressed the hope that his brief visit would contribute to an
increase in the friendship and good will between the people of both countries.
