Schulze Corporate Public Affairs TIME, Inc. Time & Life Building Rockefeller Center New York, New York 10020 Dear Mr. Schulze: I am attaching a statement - from President-elect Richard M. Nixon for 1776: The Challenge to 1969. Sincerely, James James Keogh Keogh JK/m Enc: STATEMENT FOR 1776: THE CHALLENGE TO 1969 Every generation of Americans, and many generations of people elsewhere, have benefitted from the courage and vision of the men who founded this Republic. In this turbulent world, and within this transforming society, we can benefit also from a reflection upon their experience. When our forefathers undertook their experiment in liberty, they did not have our wealth, our population, our station in the world, or our traditions of two centuries of success. They had themselves, the courage to put their ideals into practice in a new nation; and they were united behind a dream which they believed to be more important than one or all of them. If they could create the United States of America from those rural thirteen colonies of two centuries ago, we can preserve it today. Our challenges are in many ways as great as theirs, and our own courage and spirit must be at least as great as that which permeated their actions and decisions two centuries ago. Unless we have the will, unless we have the patience, unless we are united, we shall not be equal to the challenges which history has prepared for us in the years directly ahead. I am confident that we will measure up. We must not fail. Richard M. Nixon To: Bob Haldeman From: JAmes Kergh F.K.I.
