Dear Mr. Bain:
In Mr. Haldeman's absence, I do want
to acknowledge your very thoughtful letter to him of
October 28th.
As I - sure you know, it is new necessary
for him to be away from the office much of the time for
meetings and travel.
This is just to say your letter will be
brought to his attention, and to assure you he will
appreciate 50 much receiving your comments on the
campaign and your good wishes.
We are all leoking forward to that
victory on November 6th.

The attached check was addressed to
the Nixon campaign, but you will note it is payable to
Republican Assembly.
Is there some way this can be endorsed over
to us? If not, will you please handle this direct with
Mr. Irwin S. Schuman, Palm Springs Riviera Hotel (card
attached), since he definitely intended it to be a contribution
to the Nixon for Governor campaign, as you will note.

Attached is check for $250.00 received from
Mr. J. Peter Cahill, 350 Sansome Street, San Francisco,
California, which he has requested be earmarked for
television and radio.
October 30, 1962
Dear Mr. Cahill:
Jim Halley has just forwarded me your check for
$250.00 and I certainly want to express our
sincere thanks without further delay.
It is understood you would like this contribution
earmarked for additional TV or radio coverage,
and this will be done.
May I assure you that in these few remaining days
of the campaign, this is the most effective use to
which these funds can be directed, and we are most
appreciative of your recognizing the need and
contributing so generously to the cause.
With best regards.

Dear John:
The piece of paper enclosed
with your October 24th letter was
most gratefully received, badly needed,
and I can assure you will be put to
fast and effective use these few
remaining days of the eampaign.
We too were sorry things did
not jell, and the leave of absence could
not be arranged.
Somehow, despite the hurdles,
the hurlers, and the harried, we are
living out this last week in high spirits
with sure knowledge we're 7 days away
from victory.
Many thanks, John, for your
substantial help.

Dear John:
In the rush of the last few
days, I'm sorry not to have acknowledged
your notes -- and more importantly, the

Dear Leonard:
Thank you for your letter of October 31st.
You have done a superb job. It is well recognized, and
we have tried to assure you of our appreciation. Your
interest and support have been consistent. We count
upon it, and are grateful.
We have also explained all Dick Nixon has done with the
Nationalities, and although it may appear to you this
area has been neglected, this has not been the case, and
I believe my previous letter outlined the many events
fulfilled.
With the complexities involved in this all-important,
hard-hitting campaign, and knowing the sincere effort on
the part of everyone in the organization to get maximum
coverage for Dick, I am, of course, sorry to learn you
feel we have been lacking in cooperation. I can assure you,
this was neither our intent nor our desire.
We are most grateful for the substantial contribution you
and other members of the Nationalities Committee have
made to the campaign.

Thank you very much for your letter of
October 22nd.
I was most interested in having your
comments on the Santa Monica Rally, and certainly understand
and agree with your opinion in this case.
We of course have no direct control over
Republican meetings, although we do make an effort to keep
them on a reasonable time schedule and format when Dick
Nixon is participating. I have had other reports similar
to yours on the Santa Monica Rally, and while it is
unfortunate to have had this sort of thing occur, I can
assure you, and am certain you will always find, that the
Nixon meetings are always completely controlled and have
never been subject to criticism in this regard.
Thank you again for writing.

Dear Len:
One of our secretaries, Miss Joan Carroll, is
interested in continuing in campaign work. She has been
assigned to our Schedule Office during the Nixon-for-Governor
campaign, working directly with John Ehrlichman. Involved
has been her contact with the various advancemen, preparing
the schedule for publication and distribution, heavy
telephone work, and a volume of correspondence and filing.
Although Miss Carroll did not work directly for
me, I am advised by John Ehrlichman she has done a very
satisfactory job, and has been most cooperative, gotten along
very well with her co-workers, and has been exceedingly
willing to devote her time evenings and weekends if there
has been work to be done.
Miss Carroll is interested in relocating and
working in New York City. We are happy to recommend her
to you, and will appreciate any referral you might find it
possible to make.
Best regards.

Dear Don:
We appreciate your letter of October 22nd.
The representatives of the Council on Alcohol Problems did
indeed meet with Al Moscow. They transmitted to him their
data and their comments on the problem involved. Everything
they left was reviewed by Dick Nixon and in his opinion, a
meeting was not in order and would have served no useful
purpose. He did, however, address a letter to Mr. Birdsall,
copy of which is enclosed for your information.
As I recall, they also attempted to apply a little pressure
through another Assemblyman. They are persistent, as these
people usually are. I do not mean to imply they are not an
exceedingly worthwhile group. I am merely pointing out
their contact with this organization was at a high level,
their issues did reach Dick Nixon, and he did acknowledge
their contact by his letter of August 31st.
I am sure you recognize that at this stage of the campaign,
Dick's schedule is fully committed and then some, and a
meeting between now and November 6 would be impossible.
Trust this will help you get the problem off your desk.

Dear Chairman:
It is important that the understandable
enthusiasm of our campaign workers in these last
two weeks not mislead them into participating in or
initiating any unfavorable incidents or heckling of
President Kennedy.
While Kennedy's visit here this week is,
of course, completely political - in a last-minute
effort to try to save the faltering Brown campaign -
it would be a mistake on our part to mar it with
any untoward occurrence.
The outstanding grass-roets political
activity and unprecedented seal of our thousands of
dedicated volunteers should be totally directed to the
specific assignments already outlined in order to insure
Dick Wixon's 400,000 plus victory on November 6.
Will you please be sure these instructions
get to all of your Chairmen and workers immediately?
Keep up your work -- you're doing a

contact them -- and get out a release hanging it
on them -- supporting and endorsing RN -- to
offset Jr.'s gyrations.
