Attached to previous. 1 pg Tuesday, August 21, 2007 Page 5 of 5 August 27, 1962 Dear Mr. von Zell: Dick Nixon appreciated very much your letter of August 14th, and has asked me to explain the policy established for the campaign period which precludes his serving as a member of the Committee for the 36th Anniversary Foundation Dinner of the Americanism Educational League. As I am sure you will realize, many similar requests have been received and doubtless will continue to be received for permission to use Mr. Nixon's name on various Committees. There is only one equitable manner in which to handle the multitude of such requests, and that is to establish a firm policy of not participating, even to this extent, in any organizational activity during the course of a campaign. We have strictly adhered to this, and in fairness to all concerned, there can be no deviation. May I, therefore, assure you of Mr. Nixon's appreciation for your thoughtfulness in writing him and his regret that he is unable to accept your invitation to serve as a member of the Committee? With kind regards and good wishes. Sincerely, H. R. Haldeman Mr. Harry von Zell, Chairman Dinner Committee Americanism Educational League P.O. Box 90593 Airport Station Los Angeles 9, California INTER-OFFICE MEMORANDUM Nixon for Governor To: Rose Mary Woods Date: August 21, 1962 From: Agnes Waldron Subject: Americanism Educational League Distribution: I am attaching our file on this outfit. In my opinion its sole purpose seems to be to provide a living for the Exec. Director. Even though it says it has been "fighting communism" since 1927, the HUAC files in 1956 showed no reference to the League or to Lechner. The state Comm. on Un-American Activities is similarly blank. Jack Tenney was Chairman at thextix exprective one time and the current board is ultra-right and has two Birchers. There is the posibility the organization may have been anti Japanese-American. We seem to have been ignoring it for a number of years. Literature issued by the organization which was received for our files in 1953 shows the address of the Americanism Educational League as 1108 No. La Brea Ave., Inglewood, California. Richard Suns Enclosures (2) Director INFORMATION FROM THE FILES OF THE COMMITTEE ON UN-AMERICAN ACTIVITIES U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES DATE: July 10, 1956 FOR: Honorable Richard Nixon SUBJECT: Americanism Educational League; Dr. John R. Lechner The public records, files and publications of this Committee contain the following information concerning the subject organization. This report should not be construed as representing the results of an investigation by or findings of this Committee. It should be noted that the organization is not necessarily Communist or Communist-front, nor should any individuals who may be mentioned herein be considered Communists, Communist sympathizers, or fellow- travelers, unless otherwise indicated. A check of the public files, records and publications of the Committee on Un-American Activities has not shown any reference in Committee publications to either the Americanism Educational League or Dr. John R. Lechner. Files contain an undated leaflet, "Americanism Will Survive," which was published by the organization some time prior to the year 1945. It shows the address of the Americanism Educational League as 833 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, California, and officers of the league as follows: Jack B. Tenney, Chairman Dr. Walter Scott Franklin, Vice Chairman Edwards H. Metcalf, Secretary John R. Lechner, B.D., LL.D., Executive Director The same leaflet states, in part: "Founded in 1927 "The Americanism Educational League was organized in 1927 and has since been incorporated under the laws of the State of California as a non-profit, non-political institution engaged in patriotic education. "For Better Understanding "Its primary function has been to furnish, without charge, material, speakers and direction to civic leaders throughout the state in order to combat organized class and racial hatreds. Through its many channels of operation, the Americanism Educational League has consistently endeavored to create a better understanding of American traditions and American ideals." Files also contain an undated pamphlet, "The Inside Story of Our Domestic Japanese Problem," by John R. Lechner, and its title-page states: "This report has been compiled at the request of the 23rd District of the American Legion in a motion unanimously adopted." It is noted, in addition, that an endorsement of the booklet by State Senator Jack B. Tenney appears on the back of the title-page. You are cardially invited to attend a Patriotic Testimonial Dinner to be extended to the Americanism Educational League and to its Executive Director, Dr. John Robert Lechner, in recognition of Thirty years of patriotic service to this community and to our nation. NIXON CALIFORNIA United States Senate WASHINGTON, D.C. January 4, 1951 Dr. John R. Lechner, Executive Director Americanism Educational League 3312 West Vernon Avenue Los Angeles 8, California Dear Dr. Lechner: I wish to thank you for your letter of December 8, 1950, and sincerely regret that the heavy volume of mail which seems to confront a new Senator has prevented an earlier reply. The time and effort being expended by the members of the Americanism Educational League is most worthy of commendation, particularly in this time of world crisis. The critical turn of events on the international scene has stressed only too well the serious threat to freedom by the forces of Communism. The endeavors of such organizations as the Americanism Educational League are deserving of the support of loyal Ameri- cans throughout the country, and I am sure that your slogan, "A Nation Worth Saving Is A Nation Worth Serving", expresses the purpose of your organization most appropriately. I want you to know that I shall be glad to be of any as- sistance within my power in your fight against the forces of Com- munism. With kindest regards, Sincerely yours, Rubinkin Richard Nixon rn;kce A SAGA OF PATRIOTIC DEVOTION This is the story of personal sacrifice and public service which has made millions of citizens all over this nation more appreciative of their great heritage of freedom. It's the story of a man and the organization he created more than THIRTY years ago. The man is Dr. John R. Lechner, and the organization is the Americanism Educa- tional League, founded in January, 1927. The League was organized at the suggest- ion of several American Legion leaders who felt that special facilities should be established to make the best use of Dr. Lechner's remarkable training and ability to interpret American ideals. Dr. Lechner was willing to forego a lucrative career in order to serve his commun- ity and his nation, at great sacrifice to himself and his family. He entered this public service as a distinguished scholar in the field of political science and theology. holding the following degrees: Rh. B. ; Ph. B.; B.D.; M.A. ; and LL. D. Facing an enigmatic apathy of the part of the American people, who take freedom so much for granted, he has had to accept a salary over a period of years, often comparable to a day laborer, and three times mortgaged his house to carry on the important work of the League. THE RECORD The record of patriotic service rendered by the Americanism Educational League during the last three decades is phenominal, considering the meager support it has had from some 300 patriotic citizens, many of whom contribute a modest sum each year, some from the very inception of the League. The League has carried its vital message on Americanism to millions of Americans in more than 50, 000 meetings since 1927, and without charge. It has likewise con- ducted over 700 radio broadcasts, many national. The League has distributed millions of pamphlets and copies of reports on subversive activities and Americanism throughout the nation. The League originated the annual Bill of Rights program, appointing Joe Crail as its first chairman, and distributed 180, 000 copies of the Bill of Rights to high school pupils. The League conducted the first mass NEW CITIZENS LOYALTY DAY with several thousand new citizens attending rallies at the Gilmore Stadium and the Shrine Auditorium in 1937 and 1938. These meetings were the forerunners of the "I Am an American Day". Dr. Lechner personally addressed over 12, 500 civic and patriotic meetings during the last thirty years, including more than 500 high school assemblies from Fresno to San Diego. The League has been one of America's most militant and effective opponents of the Communist conspiracy for thirty years, and its director has been villified by the Reds, and was once the target for a Red bullet. His fearless opposition to Communism, Naziism and other unAmerican movements, coupled with his inspira- tional interpretation of American ideals, stamps Dr. Lechner as one of the nation's outstanding patriots. Arthur C. Arnold, Chairman Americanism Educational League Suite 228 - 6363 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles 48, California RECEIVED JUL 31 1956 OFFICE OF THE VICE PRESIDENT Road to Ruin by JOHN ROBERT LECHNER, B.D.; LL.D Every freedom-loving American should read this article, and ponder well its contents. L. MILLS BEAM, Vice-Chgirman Board, Americanism Educational League THE HAPPINESS BOYS History has recorded the steps in the downfall of the great Roman Empire. These steps were moral decay, licentiousness and lack of initiative. They were elements in a decadent society. These elements are not true of the American people. And still, history may recount the fall of Western Civilization because the lofty ideals of our people have blinded them to an imminent and awful danger. We are too willing to trust a deadly enemy for the sake of world peace. Like some magic spell, every word uttered by the Soviets which might promise friendship or peaceful intention is dramatized in every media of public information, and although the actions behind these honeyed words belie their sincerity, many Americans are ready to do business with the Communists. We hate no one. We want to get along in this world. The Soviet HAPPINESS BOYS know this too well, and they have cast a a spell over our nation to which millions of our citizens, who should know better, have succumbed! Unless the American people snap out of the present state of mass hypnosis and demand continued protective measures by the Government against the threat of com- munism at home and abroad, we shall find the foundations of freedom undermined and the will to resist the depredations of a Godless enemy destroyed. We shall travel down the road to ruin! GENEVA CONFERENCE When Krushchev and Bulganin declared at the Geneva Summit Conference that the Soviet Union desires sincerely to live in "peaceful co-existence" with the nations of the free world, they threw a bombshell into the bastions of the Western World. As com- mendable as any overture to the easing of international tensions may appear, never- theless, President Eisenhower may have handed the Soviets a propaganda weapon far more effective than any atomic secrets in the current struggle to enhance the universal state of the Communist regime. At any rate, the winsome smiles of the HAPPINESS BOYS has all but shaken the foundations of NATO and has given anti-American forces in the Far East, India and Africa a powerful argument against the "imperialism" of the United States. We are now on the defensive to show why the United States should not lead the free world into a new era of peaceful co-existence on the basis of STATUS QUO. Rep. Clement J. Zablocki, recently returned from the Middle East, reported to Congress that the Geneva Conference was a serious blow to our cause in that area. He claimed that the people in that troubled zone are either moving in the direction of neutralism or toward the USSR, believing that this nation betrayed the people of the satellite nations by accepting the Soviet Union on an equal basis at Geneva, ignoring our promises of liberation of the enslaved peoples behind the iron curtain. Still, if this country flatly turns down these Soviet overtures to "peace," we will be accused of being war-mongers. Certainly, the prospects of peaceful co-existence from the lips of smiling Soviets is enticingly attractive to many internationally minded leaders in our Government, who appear to influence our foreign policy. Only a realistic and factual analysis of the serious implications involved in the acceptance of Soviet terms for peace can prevent the ensnarement of our own leaders and the hostility of our friends abroad. Aside from other and more important considerations, the new Soviet peace offensive has been designed to convince our Allies that it is no longer necessary to spend money for armaments, since the USSR will "never" attack. According to Generals Le May and Twining, this is a gigantic hoax. They show in their recent reports that the Soviet Union has already outstripped this nation in the building of long range bombers and ballistic missiles, and should exceed us in quality as well in another two years. "They will be capable of a devastating surprise attack in three years, or less!" The American people are tasting the palatable fruits of a synthetic prosperity, and detest any suggestion that there may be an end to that prosperity. Or to their freedom! It may be highly unpopular to disillusion our people, but the fact remains that history has recorded no case where an aggressive nation has ever armed to the teeth with offensive weapons without resorting to war. The fundamental difference between this nation and the Soviet Union is that we have always resisted aggression, while the Soviet Union, since the advent of Communism, has violated 39 non-aggression pacts, and has had a history of aggression since 1945. To close our eyes to this truth would make us highly vulnerable to the evil machinations of the Marxist conspiracy. 1 MORAL DEFEAT the hundreds of thousands, and are taking place, perhaps at the very moment this article Let's be HONEST. AMERICAN TERMS FOR PEACE The time has come for the American people to call their bluff! Let millions of our people who love freedom, make known to our Congress, the terms on which WE, THE PEOPLE, will accept peaceful co-existence! It is a matter of a few minutes to write a letter, but it may take generations to restore freedom, if we once lose it by carelessness and indifference! Here are the terms we demand of the Soviet Union for a SAFE peace: 1. Release all prisoners of every nation, and close the slave labor camps. 2. Restore the freedom of all conquered nations, permitting free elections. 3. Abolish the worldwide network of spies and foreign agents. 4. Renounce the Marxist plan for world domination and aggression. 5. Remove the iron curtain, and permit complete freedom of travel and inspection in every corner of the Soviet Union. Can we expect these terms to be met by the Soviet leaders headed by the HAPPI- NESS BOYS? The answer is self-evident. International Communism, despite the post mortem purge of Stalin, whose hatchet men now head the Kremlin, and despite its declaration of "peaceful intentions," has not changed its avowed determination to destroy the free nations of the world by intrigue or by force, and to set up a universal Soviet dictatorship. Hence, Americans must take the communist menace seriously, at home and abroad. Secretary Dulles made an important observation recently on the responsibility of the American people in the present conflict between freedom and communism. He said, "It is not enough to prove that despotism is bad. It is equally necessary to go on- and on-proving that freedom is good." For every communist meeting in this country, for every propaganda letter sent to the Congress, for every pro-communist story in the press or on the radio, loyal Americans should have a hundred to offset their effect! The price of freedom against so powerful an enemy is not vigilance alone; it is militant opposition to every communist maneuver and complete dedication to American ideals! If enough Americans let the other fellow worry about this problem, we shall surely be headed down the road to ruin! Sir: May I urge you to give your personal and immediate attention to the invitation I have been instructed to extend to you on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Americanism Educational League, of which I have the privilege of serving as vice-chairman. I have attached a brief copy of the great public service rendered by this League during the last thirty years which I hope you will study. It does not tell the full story. Only the perusal of more than 5, 000 letters from civic and patriotic organizations in the files of the League can tell how much this work has meant in the never-ending struggle to preserve American Freedom. The Board of Directors of the Americanism Educational League voted unanimously to hold a gala PATRIOTIC BANQUET on the night of October 22, at the famed Moulin Rouge, which will seat the 1200 civic and patriotic leaders we expect in attendance. The setting will be excellent for a national radio and television broadcast of the proceedings. This great event will demonstrate to many communist front organizations in this community that loyal Americans stand behind their patriotic leaders, and that they appreciate individuals and organizations dedicated to the fight for American ideals. The Communist conspiracy has made significant headway in our great Land of Freedom for ONE reason; its advocates have been unafraid and have been eager to shout their cause to the housetops! We have lost many encounters with this evil force because too many Americans have been reluctant to tell the world how much they think of Americanism! There will be a GENERAL COMMITTEE OF 100, under hose auspices this patriotic affair will be held in honor of the Americanism Educational League, and its founder, Dr. John R. Lechner. You are invited to be a member of this COMMITTEE. I should like to have your reply to this invitation by return mail so that I can report to our Board of Directors at the next meeting. Very sincerely yours, MILLS BEAM LMB:ec RE. 4-3997 THIRTY YEARS OF PATRIOTIC SERVICE AMERICANISM EDUCATIONAL LEAGUE 6363 Wilshire Boulevard This year will mark the completion of three decades of immeasurable public service to help preserve and enhance the principles of sound Americanism. The primary objectives which have inspired the unwaivering devotion of the offices and associates of the Americanism Educational League for thirty years have been to interpret constructively, the remarkable heritage of freedom and opportunity under our Constitutional form of government, and to oppose vigorously, alien propaganda aimed at the destruction of the American way of life. To list the many accomplishments of the Americanism Educational League since its inception would be impossible. However, the following highlights of this patriotic work should suffice to merit the highest commendation of civic and patriotic leaders in this area. PRO-AMERICANISM. 1. The League carried its vital message of Americanism to countless thousands of citizens through more than 50, 000 meetings since January, 1927. 2. The League has conducted over 700 radio broadcasts, many of them national, all of them dealing with Americanism. 3. The League organized the annual BILL OF RIGHTS program for Southern California, which still functions under the chairman originally appointed by the League. It distributed nearly 250, 000 copies of the Bill of Rights to high school students. 4. The League conducted the first mass NEW CITIZENS LOYALTY DAY, with thousands of new citizens attending rallies at Gilmore Stadium and the Shrine Auditorium in 1937 and 1938. This was the incentive for the founding of "I Am an American Day". 5. The League, through its director, conducted more than 500 high school assemblies from Fresno to San Diego. 6. The League has cooperated with hundreds of other organizations in their work in the field of Americanism, and rendered notable service during World War II in assisting Civil Defense. MILITANT FIGHTER. 1. COMMUNISM The Americanism Educational League was the FIRST organization to conduct an active campaign to expose the sinister objectives and techniques of the Communist international conspiracy. In 1927 it held a huge mass meeting attended by 15, 000 people to protest the activities of the Communist fifth column in America. Gov. C.C. Young was the principal speaker. Since that time, hundreds of similar meetings have been conducted by the League. In 1931, "Reds" was published by the League, containing 6 radio addresses delivered by Dr. Lechner, and distributed by the thousands. 10, 000 copies of "Communism-What It Is", was published later and sent to organizations all over the nation. The League was responsible for the sudden death of Labor's Non-Partisan League, the powerful political front of Communism in California. 2. NAZIISM "Naziism on the Pacific Coast, a factual analysis of Bund activities on the Coast, ended Nazi activities in this area. March 19, 1951 Mr. Robert K. Encl. February 27, 1951 Congressman John Wood, Chairman llouse UnAmerican Activities Committee Washington, D. C. Dear John: A constituent has requested that I obtain for him any information I might have as to the Americanism Educational League, 1108 North La Brea Avenue, Ingle- wood, California, of which Dr. John R. Lechner is the executive director. I am personally aware that Dr. Lechner has for some years been active as an anti-Communist speaker and organizer of groups to combat Communism in this country. I would, however, appreciate any information your Committee might have as to the effectiveness of Dr. Lechner and the Americanism Educational League, since my constituent 1s concerned as to whether this organization is deserving of financial support, which I understand is being solicited for its activities in California. With kindest regards, Sincerely, RN:pw Richard Nixon February 27, 1951 Mr. Robert K. Nixon Senate Building Washington, D.C. Sir: A few weeks ago the South Pasadena Rotary Club was addressed by Dr. John R. Lechner, the executive director of the Americanism Educational League. Mr. Lechner made an eloquent plea for assistance against the Communist threat and asked for individual support of the battle. His talk gave the impression that he wished support in the form of letters to Congressmen demanding certain actions. Since making his talk to our group, each member has re- ceived two letters from the Americanism Education League, whose address is 1108 N. La Brea Avenue, Inglewood, California, all asking for cash donations. On behalf of this interested group I would appreciate your reply giving what information you may have available as to whether or not this organization is deserving of financial support. For your information I am enclosing a sample of the letters that each member of the South Pasadena Rotary Club has received since hearing Dr. Lechner's talk. Very truly yours, ROBERT K. CLANTON Vice-President RKC/tj Encls. During the last five years, the American people have spent the huge sum of 150 BILLION DOLLARS for aid to Europe, Asia and South America, and for defense purposes at home. During the last several months, the American people have sacrificed 50,000 of the flower of our young manhood on the altar of war in Korea. Countless thousands more may become casualties before the ink on this pamphlet dries. Why this great expenditure of money and men? There is only one answer. We have given until it hurts to help stop communism abroad. Still, WE HAVE DONE LITTLE OR NOTHING TO STOP COMMUNISM AT HOME! The present "laws" are ridiculed by the American traitors. Com- munists still run their newspapers and print their vicious pamphlets right under our noses, while the parade of our boys marches on toward the battlefield. Communist saboteurs are still free to organize and com- plete plans for the revolution BEHIND THE AMERICAN LINES. There is neither common sense nor justice to this coddling of Red Destroyers at home. We are selling out our youth with a mess of political pottage! Outlaw Communism! There is but ONE course open to the American people if we are to back up our boys in Korea. That course is to deal with the traitors at home as enemies of our freedom, not as glorified martyrs. Congress had the power to OUTLAW the Nazi Bund in this country. It outlawed the Silver Shirts and the Ku Klux Klan. Let it immediately define communism in America as a deadly international conspiracy aimed at the destruction of American freedom, and OUTLAW IT AS SUCH. Then give law enforcement agencies the power to seize all communist records, close all propaganda centers and printing plants. Then JAIL EVERY COM- MUNIST LEADER AND ORGANIZER AND KNOWN SABOTEUR until the war with communism is won, and the nations of the earth can live in freedom once more. It is far more humane for us to jail communists than to have them murder our men, women and children! What YOU Can Do About This The fight to get Congressional action requires organization and direction. The Americanism Educational League is circulating petitions throughout the nation calling for the program suggested above. You can help by writing for a petition to circulate among your friends and neighbors.
