MEMORANDUM
THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
January 20, 1971
MEMORANDUM FOR :
MR. H. R. HALDEMAN
FROM :
L. HIGBY
SUBJECT :
Roger Ailes
He called to talk with me on two matters. One, is his contract
with the RNC, the other the line he should be putting out with
regard to his new relationship with the White House.
With regard to the contract at the RNC, I propose to tell Ailes
that we will have to hold up on this until after the ground rules
with the new leadership are firmly established. I will tell him,
however, that in the next week or two we will set up an appoint-
ment to see Tom Evans and work out appropriate arrangements.
With regard to the line that he should be putting out on his new
station, I believe that he should simply say that because of the
way that his business has expanded over the last year and the
needs of the White House, it is no longer practical or economi-
cally feasible for Ailes to continue the same type of relationship.
He will be working on a general basis with the WH and working on
a broad range of assignments with the RNC, something that is
more suited to the way his business has developed. I emphasized
to him that we plan to say nothing of a derogatory nature or any-
thing that would indicate that this was a step down for him or his
business.
If you agree with this, I will call Ailes back and inform him
of these two decisions.

MEMORANDUM FOR H. R. HALDEMAN
FROM :
L. HIGBY L
SUBJECT :
Speech Writer for Senator Dole
I discussed with Ray Price the problem of providing some
speech writing assistance to Senator Dole. Price indicates that
while they are snowed now, they will try to provide some
assistance. He would, however, like to talk to you about this
subject and answer some questions he has, i.e. how much
assistance is necessary, what sort of a tone do we want Dole
to take, etc.
One thought that came up that might be at least an interim
solution would be to have Nofziger write for Dole under either
Buchanan or Price's supervision. The thought here would be
Nofziger may be going over to the National Committee to handle
this chore anyway and if Nofziger spent the rest of his time here
doing this it would 1) relieve the burden and 2) get Nofziger
writing somewhat the way we want Dole to be talking rather
than the way Nofziger wants Dole to be talking.
