H. R. HALDEMAN\nFROM :\nL. HIGBY\nSUBJECT :\nRoger Ailes\nHe called to talk with me on two matters. One, is his contract\nwith the RNC, the other the line he should be putting out with\nregard to his new relationship with the White House.\nWith regard to the contract at the RNC, I propose to tell Ailes\nthat we will have to hold up on this until after the ground rules\nwith the new leadership are firmly established. I will tell him,\nhowever, that in the next week or two we will set up an appoint-\nment to see Tom Evans and work out appropriate arrangements.\nWith regard to the line that he should be putting out on his new\nstation, I believe that he should simply say that because of the\nway that his business has expanded over the last year and the\nneeds of the White House, it is no longer practical or economi-\ncally feasible for Ailes to continue the same type of relationship.\nHe will be working on a general basis with the WH and working on\na broad range of assignments with the RNC, something that is\nmore suited to the way his business has developed. I emphasized\nto him that we plan to say nothing of a derogatory nature or any-\nthing that would indicate that this was a step down for him or his\nbusiness.\nIf you agree with this, I will call Ailes back and inform him\nof these two decisions.\nAgree\nDisagree\nMEMORANDUM\nTHE WHITE HOUSE\nWASHINGTON\nAnd\nJanuary 26, 1971\nWf Not\nMEMORANDUM FOR H. R. HALDEMAN\nFROM :\nL. HIGBY L\nSUBJECT :\nSpeech Writer for Senator Dole\nI discussed with Ray Price the problem of providing some\nspeech writing assistance to Senator Dole. Price indicates that\nwhile they are snowed now, they will try to provide some\nassistance. He would, however, like to talk to you about this\nsubject and answer some questions he has, i.e. how much\nassistance is necessary, what sort of a tone do we want Dole\nto take, etc.\nOne thought that came up that might be at least an interim\nsolution would be to have Nofziger write for Dole under either\nBuchanan or Price's supervision. The thought here would be\nNofziger may be going over to the National Committee to handle\nthis chore anyway and if Nofziger spent the rest of his time here\ndoing this it would 1) relieve the burden and 2) get Nofziger\nwriting somewhat the way we want Dole to be talking rather\nthan the way Nofziger wants Dole to be talking.\nKeen - uccept wineall\nagreed writer.
